Actually, numerous studies on the long term impact of C&R on trout populations show that it has no significant cumulative effect. Nor does fishing over redds.
If look at the Bow regulations from the 80's and 90's, anglers were using bait, keeping trout, yet the population continued to flourish and expandd during that period.
Wasn’t there just a paper out that showed increased egg resorption in steelhead following the stress of catch and release?

Ya it blows my mind that they don’t put water restrictions in place. Water meters=city gettin paaaaaaid

Seriously, you think that the increase in C&R angling is the leading cause of trout population declines on the Bow over the past 15 years? It has some impact but studies have shown the effects are negligible.
As for enforcement on the Bow, it has increased significantly since 2006. F&W told me back then that they only received 4 calls to RAP to report illegal fishing activities on the Bow, for all of 2005.
Evidence based science is the foundation on which good management strategies are created.
The Bow isn't the only river that has experienced a 50℅ loss of Rainbow population over this time period. Several other major trout rivers in the US mid west have experienced the same decline.
I feel that many of the issues that have had a very negative impact on the Bow fishery have long been identified. Doing more fish counts may not lead to any new information.
The problem is the political will to make the necessary changes. Lobbying efforts have fallen short thus far. When flows get dangerously low, the City of Calgary won't even place a water advisory or enact water restrictions. Instead AEP closes the river to fishing. For the past four years the City of Calgary pays Trans Alta to draw down the reservoir levels 20,' at the Ghost Reservoir, as a flood mitigation strategy. This increase in flow extends natural run off period by about a month. The increasd flow and subsequent turbidity, negatively affects sunlight penetration to the stream bed where the basis of the food chain starts. Aquatic mosses, plants, invertebrates and all marine life is negatively affect. This is followed by water hoarding in August to fill the reservoir back up to generate power.
Your lawn ain’t healthy until it’s growing mushrooms in August!

Everyone took days off to fish during the week because of the the dismal forecast for the weekend. That's what I did.
I'd assume that place would be a gongshow on the weekends and I've only ever fished there once.
My next thought woulda been “well how did it fish mid week?” Reports good or bad, move quick.
anyways, what does it say about Us if we’re making blanket statements from a couple isolated casual observations? Ha

Probably the quickest way of finding a fish there is to watch the shorelines in the deep South Bay and island for bait busting/fish splashes and fire a thunder creek minnow in.
-
Just depends on rain. Usually starts to come back in to form around the last week of June. Although, as mentioned in another thread, it looks like some of the snowpacks are dropping quick and may be 1-2 weeks faster than last year.
If I doesn’t rain all June, I don’t see why we’re not fishin the bow by the 20th...maybe sooner.

You bet...already in the box

Love tying and fishing soft hackles, grew up swinging and fishing em. They can be deadly during a Caddis pre-emergance along with Mayfly hatches and I will often use a variety of them when nothing else is moving on the water. You can either swing them down and across or fish them up like a dry fly, let them drift by and then run them into a swing. Keep a "bow" in your fly line on the downstream swing to act a shock absorber as takes on the swing can be quite hard.
Ya I’ve tied some tan and some green caddis soft hackles and also some that are a soft hackle version of a sparkle pupa. I love the idea of sparkle pupa and they usually clean up, but I hate how fragile they are. Handful of fish and the body fibers start to tear out.

Guess we could always piss into the wind together.
a Couple friends blasted some partridge so I’ve got it coming out the ying yang. Been making a new box and running out of ideas. Not sure how I feel about the attractor versions and was hoping someone could chime in on them for different fishing conditions.

Any body here particularly avid?

Make a solid thread base at the tie in point and hold it tight while you’re putting in your wraps...combined with some heavier thread so you can really crank on it and it shouldn’t roll.
That being said, I don’t see a problem with the collar you have. If you don’t want it on the bottom, you can just trim it.

Looks fine! Did you watch galloups videos on them? He says the design calls for a sparsely spun head. Although, I think the point of that style of head lends itself to articulated flies better as it slows the head down after the strip, while the tail continues on, creating a swimming motion.

Ahhh I see. I was just teasing you... for the most part

That wasn't my point. But carry on
If I may summarize your “point.”
The funniest part is the fish was caught in a stocked Calgary community lake. It could have been bonked and on the BBQ so who gives a flying f about the pic.
You’re right. That fish should just count it’s lucky stars. In fact, it should have been happy getting punted back into the lake, since it wasn’t going on the grill!

Coulda said the same thing about a bow river fish a couple years ago. Nothing wrong with treating something with a little care and respect...after you put a sharp hook through its mouth, of course.

Helpful Hint For The Day:
If you don't like the content of a post, ignore it or go away completely. We're all adults here (to a point) , complaining to the Admins is the equivalent of a 5 year old telling their mom on someone.
The troll in me Has to disagree a bit.
some people post some real bs handling and shouldn’t Be proud of it nor promote
it on community forums. Plugs
need to be called out. Gently at first,
of course.
I guess some are too scared to just call out the person on the forums or forever be labelled a troll haha...so they whine privately to a moderator. Although, not sure why the mods deleted it.

Lol I’m just kidding.
Some putz probably thought it wasn’t in the water. Probably the best pic of a fish posted here for a long time.

Cultural appropriation

Is it traditional tinny or flat bottom?
a l tin should slide relatively easily onto a flat deck. For a traditional hull, I’m Not sure if you’d have to flip it over or not for it to be stable.

Sort of missing the logic. They’re repairing it at the end of the season anyways. It’s going to rain and turn it into a mud bog in July.
Not sure how a south facing slope hasn’t dried out yet.

I do need your advice, Bron.
Securing a conehead is fun..but one might take that last bit of wrap and maybe make it, or waste some over-tying Zonkers.
Any tips on securing a conehead when just a bit short would be appreciated.. if it's convenient.
-M.
Some schlappen, dubbing or chenille would work. I tend to use ice dub. Stack the fibers then tie in at the mid point (or however long you want it) and fold/brush it back over. Just Make sure you have a good thread base so whatever you do tie there, sticks after. It’s annoying half way through your day to find your cone pushed halfway down the shank of your hook.
