  1. I just returned from the Fly fishing Expo and as every one says "It's the same every year"....and it was. It was nice to touch base with a few people that I see there every year. I saw some new gear, picked up a few cheap flies from Reel flies, grabbed a bit of swag etc. The highlight and the reason that I went was to hear Tom Rosenbauer's presentation " Taking your fly fishing to the next level". It was awesome. He just explained and simplified the whole game. Excellent!!

  2. The Amundson seems to be of the same ilk as the aforementioned Bass Pro and Cabelas(US) models with perhaps a better holster.

Sometimes grit can get in the ferrules and the sections stick. Just make sure they are free of grit before extending. Better to be stuck than pull apart easily I guess.

    Wade safe!!

  3. It's good for camping gear etc. I found the fly fishing department disappointing. I'm not sure if they carry the above wading staff. I checked Cabelas Canada on line and they didn't carry it. Bass Pro has them for sure!!

You should check out the store tho'....lots of gear!!

  4. I purchased the wading staff above from Cabela's (USA) 8 years ago. Best purchase ever!! the shock cord inside finally wore out and I purchased a similar one at Bass Pro near Calgary a few years ago. It collapses to a somewhat smaller size than the "name" brands and fits easily on my belt. I use it all the time and it makes wading so much easier. It's great on freestone streams but it does get stuck in softer mud/dirt and can pull apart. The carrying pouch is made of pretty thin material. My friend has the same staff and the pouch belt loop fell apart after a few years and I replaced it with a piece of nylon from an arm of an old camping chair!!

I think this staff is the best value. It does the job and is not in the way until you need it. Highly recommended.

If I could copy and paste on this site I would post the link.......

  5. I made the same inquiry a few years ago and got lucky. A member had a Patagonia wading jacket, in my size still with original packaging and tags for sale cheap/ cheap...Awesome jacket.

  6. Uberfly....here's the kind of luck I have. I saw the Patagonia Lights on sale for 1/2 price from an online Canadian retailer in my size. I waited a few days and they were gone...dammit!! A local flyshop sells both the Simms vapour as well as the Patagonia Ultra light and recommended the Vapour......decisions ...decisions!!

  7. My 2 pairs of Cloudveil wading boots have worn out so over the winter I will be researching, then purchasing new wading boots for next season. I fish exclusively on the freestone rivers around the Oldman. I have only worn felt soles but I'm open to change if you think a rubber sole might be better for these rivers. I don't scramble around very much nor walk very far.

I would prefer a lighter weight boot as that is what I'm used too.

Any suggestions? Please indicate the make and model. Thanks!! I appreciate your input.

  8. I bought the NZ indicators to try this year for early, high water nymphing for cutties. Fortunately due to low run off, the cutties were looking up from day one. In fact I caught my biggest fish of the year on opening day on a Fat Albert!! I guess I'll have to wait until next season.

  9. I have spent a lot of days fishing the Oldman and tribs this year and it has been one for the ages. The small snowcap and the mild spring led to minimal run off and water levels were about 6 weeks ahead come opening day. Low water levels and warm temperatures have put us fly fishermen in an unpleasant position.

Many think the recent closures will make the Oldman/Livingston area even busier than it already is. I am hoping that fly fishermen that usually fish the closed rivers may just take some time off instead of rushing to the "Gap" for their fly fishing fix.

The forecast is favourable as rain and lower temperatures are expected for the next few days. I'm thinking...If you really love fly fishing and the resource which is beautiful healthy trout. take the next few days off. Things will be better soon. The fish will be happier and the fishing will be better if we leave them alone for a few days.
