  3. Wholesale Sports could not compete with the big box American stores - Bass Pro and Cabelas. It's too bad that big corporate American stores keep killing our smaller Canadian enterprises. Now that Wholesale is gone it is most important we support our local Canadian stores so they don't disappear.

  6. Hello everyone, I have a new post on my website: flyfishingexplorer.com. This new photo essay is about having some fun hiking and dry fly fishing for aggressive Brook Trout on Cataract Creek while enjoying the amazing eastern slopes of the Rockies Mountains! It is so much fun trying to catch these smaller Brookies especially when the farther you hike from the road the more aggressive & unsuspecting fish you find. You know you've had a great day when you lose track of how many fish you actually caught on the dry fly, Check out my other photo essays from the Oldman, Livingstone, Elbow and Highwood Rivers. Also you can watch my interview videos with legendary Jack Dennis and Jim McLellan as they discuss their fly fishing topics. January Tip: Now is the time to check you fishing equipment and see what you will require for the upcoming season. 12. Hard to believe people don't realize the damage that is and can be done when you drive vehicles through creeks and rivers. Nothing upsets fisherman more than damage to our precious streams.

  15. Yes the Patagonia display of new products was at the Fly fishing Expo at Spruce Meadows that was held on January 23 to 25, 2015. It is called the Western Canadian Fly Fishing Exposition and held every year in Calgary. Many companies displayed their latest products at the Expo that included their newest fly rod designs, drift boats, waders & boots, clothing & vests, fly fishing accessories, trip destinations and guiding services. There were also several seminars held by notable fly fisherman on fly tying, casting and other fly fishing techniques. It is definitely a great show and a must attend for the dedicated fly fisherman who is interested in what is new in the sport for 2015.

  18. Hello everyone, My brother and I created a video this past October that is called "Back Country Fly Fishing in Cypress Hills." I fished the Battle Creek where I caught Brook, Rainbow and Brown Trout in a setting of spectacular scenery. It's always interesting to hike, explore and fish near a National Canadian Historical Site! Hope you enjoy it. Cheers, Lefty See the Youtube connection to the video above.
  19. I also have a story that is quite unique. Caught a Bull Trout in an eastern slopes river on a Stimulator and it had a Cutthroat in it's mouth already with only the tail sticking out. He must of wanted some dessert with his meal! He didn't fight much like a typical Bull. Probably hard to fight when your loaded with a Cutty. He measured approximately 22 to 23 inches long. My quick measuring technique is to use hand spans to measure a fish in the net. One hand span for me is 9 inches from the tip of my thumb to the tip of my pinky finger. If the Bull is two and 1/2 hand spans long then he is approximately 22 to 23 inches in length (9+9+4.5 inches). Got to get me a net with inches marked inside it. Picture of the Bull with Cutty in his mouth below:
  20. Holy moly - the one fly that no one mentioned and has saved the day time after time for us when dry fly-fishing especially busy Rivers like the Livingstone is the Tricorythodes Minutus (3 tails). Yes they are size 18 to 22 but when the Cutts are rising to Tricos all hell breaks loose!!! For example right at sundown you can catch double digit amounts of Cutts during this hatch. We have experienced these hatches and frenzies a few times in the past few years and it is absolutely amazing to see and fish!!!! My advice is to be smart and tie some tippet to your Trico flies ahead of time to avoid frustration and swearing during the hatch and Cutt frenzy especially in low light conditions. The Trico Spinner is the pattern I like and when dead spinners are falling on the River (the Spinner Fall) you will witness the most aggressive Cutthroat feeding on the river making it look like every fish is rising to feed!!! Tight lines, L
  21. Great discussion on Cutty flies. Lots of good reliable pattern suggestions. Now for something completely different and funny. Here is a fly that I have actually used in the fall (Sep & Oct) with some success. Usually not my first choice but Cutties and Bulls can't resist bumping this fly. Check out the photo. The eyes say it all!!
  22. Well we had the rock examined and in fact it is pyrite. My daughter was disappointed but we did learn a lot about southwestern Alberta history during the gold rush period. There are still several individuals currently looking for the Lost Lemon Mine and we hope that someone is lucky enough to find it. Cheers.
  23. My daughter found a black igneous rock with some soft gold flakey material in it last Sunday. The rock was found near the flooded river bank of the Highwood River in the Kananaskis Valley. Is it real or is it Pyrite (fool's gold)? Another question is did we actually find some gold from the legendary Lost Lemon Mine? Just a brief history of the gold rush fever in 1870, particularly the southwestern foothills of Alberta. It had its share of pioneer stories of half-crazed gold hunters, the most sensational being the legend of the Lost Lemon Mine: a tale of discovery, murder and madness involving two prospectors named Lemon and Blackjack. According to Senator Dan Riley who was mayor of the Town of High River in 1906 - legend has it that Lemon & Blackjack found a huge seam of gold in the Kananaskis Mountains in 1870 but got into a violent argument, ending with Lemon splitting his partner's head open with an axe in the middle of the night. The gold was never recovered nor mined, and to this day, the story of the Lost Lemon Mine is veiled in mystery, but still generating ongoing camp fire theories and debate. We are going to get the rock inspected by a geologist friend and see if it is real or not. Stay tuned!
  24. If the rail cars are not secured and go into the Bow River this would be an environmental disaster to the river’s ecosystem!!! My rough estimation is that 6 rail cars full of diesel or jet fuel carry more than 30,000 gallons each for a total of almost 200,000 gallons or 750,000 litres. It will be interesting to see who was the bridge inspector used by CP Rail. They must move quickly to get those cars away from the river! Also Bonnybrook Sewage Plant is continuing to release raw sewage into the Bow River until they can get things back to normal.
