  1. I sepnd most of fly fishing budget at Troutfitters due to its proximity. They have always been very helpful to me and tolerant of my stupidity when I was just learning. Fish tales has been good to me as well but its along way from home. Wholesale is good cause I can leave the wife and kid at Ikea or Micheals etc and actually browse and the guys behind the counter have been very helpful as well.

  2. I think that stating C02 is not a posionous gas is a little misleading if not flat out incorrect. Not to step on any toes but in high enough concentrations CO2 is toxic or fatal. It doesn't however exist in our atmosphere at anywhere near toxic levels and even the increases you mentioned wouldn't even come close, however before anyone goes out and starts inhaling concentrated CO2 and dies this needs to be said.

Government spending large amounts of money on anything should be heavily scrutinized and I agree there are better ways of spending this money.

  3. I guess I'm not done spending money just yet....... <_<

That is a very true statement honestly taking up crack smoking might have been a cheaper hobby.

I am going to recommend that you take a basic course in flyfishing. All of the shops in town offer some form of introductory course. It might be getting a little late in the year for one of the classes as they tend to be in the spring. If you can't find a course you might be able to get one of the pros on the site to help you out for a few hours. I checked fishtales website and it indicates that they have one more intro session advertised this year Fish Tales Level 1 Fly Fishing Troutfitters seem to be done for the year. Hansons boot camp has also been highly recommended.

Also check out the fly fishing get togethers section a lot of people post where and when they are going and most wouldn't mind a companion.

  4. Friction is the force resisting the relative motion of two surfaces in contact or a surface in contact with a fluid (e.g. air on an aircraft or water in a pipe).

So yes air over the top of a pop can creates noise due to friction, friction creates vibrations in the pop can which we hear as sound. Your both right. Interesting thought max about the line rubbing on the guides it must transfer some energy away from the line to the rod. I wonder if the amount of energy lost is not made up for by the amount of energy conserved on the pick up of the line. Less energy on the back cast vs a little energy lost when shooting.

  5. I realize it they aren't truely articulated but I was inspired by a recent article in Fly Fusion on stretch floss so I came up with these two flies. both are very flexible and you could conceivably tie them as long as you want. Both are using #8 hook I use for stonefly nymphs Daiichi 11??, and some stretchy red stuff furled.

1 Red (midge?) stretch floss. ~3"

    2 Stretch Flex Rouge 1/8". ~5"

They represent my 2nd and 3rd attempt at furling (is that a word?) anything. More to show the concept and I don't think the trout will care. Never fished them but I suspect they will get horribly tangled around my leader and/or dropper.

  6. Beautiful photos. Trip of a lifetime for sure. Those pictures of cod make me miss home. Going to have to try for some cod on the fly rod when I go home in a few weeks.

  7. After harassing my wife about not having a hobby (really bad idea for any men considering it) I decided I should share one of mine with her and as it was 10pm and we couldn't just go get her a license and go fishing, I decided to introduce her to fly tying. As I already had all the gear out and easily accessable I thought I would start with some marabou streamers I had been playing with. I call them bloody cream puffs. Here are our efforts:

  8. Thanks for taking the time to have a look, and thank you for your kind replies.

Luukesh: I'm using a Canon S3 IS - 6mp with the image stabilization (great for shooting from moving boats, float tubes and in low light). Canon recently came out with the S5 IS which has a few nice upgrades.

    Canon S5 IS review.

Those are amazing shots. I have an S1 IS and keep thinking I should upgrade but the pictures that I take with it are as good as I can hope for. The S5 looks sweet.

  9. isn't it somewhat peculiar that the politians can find another reason to give themselves yet another raise, but can't afford to insure that our health care professonals get monies in there satchels to keep the best here .

Word. Our CBA is up and they are renegotiating it right now. The province offered us a ~4% per year for the next 4 yrs, we countered with 9%, 8% and 8%. Personally I think stelmachs 34% sounds a lot better. In the end we are unlikely to cover the cost of living increases over the next 3 years.

  10. I was thinking seeing as many of us give up on the Bow for a few weeks during run off that I would suggest having a fly tying evening. I was thinking of this coming Saturday the 31st at my place. Possible theme of big dark colored bugs suitable for high/muddy water conditions, but tie what you like. And if the weather is decent we could hit the bow on Sunday and try out our creations.

  11. There's a place in Brentwood mall, which is a specialty store for odd shaped feet - they had a few different types of hiking boots in stock last time I was in.

I second this suggestion they have very good service and they found a pair of shoes for me for work which have been excellent. I even had them suggest that they would give me the correct sizing and I could go find shoes elsewhere if I wanted.
