  1. hey everyone, the wifey and i have 2 to 3 weeks to go on vacation in november and we are having trouble deciding where to go. it must be:

    1. cheap (cuz i'm cheap, she's not)

    2. warm (beach weather)

    3. on or very close to the beach

    4. not an all inclusive

    5. not mexico

    6. good food and beer

    7. no further south than south america

    8. funky shopping for her

    9. cool pubs/bars for both of us

    and most important...

    10. fishing. i'd like to take my 7wt and be able to wander around on my own and catch whatever. not looking to be on a boat or hire a guide (well maybe once but i'm cheap).

thanks for any and all input, i know i can count on my fellow fisherman folk.

Not always cheap to get there, but San Pedro, Belize is a good place to cover most of your requirements. Sun Breeze hotel is reasonable, lots of bonefish, neat eating and drinking establishments, etc

  2. All good reels mentioned so far.

I would set a budget and it will be easy to find something that will fit in your budget that you won't regret the purchase. I have had great luck with the following reels

    Galvan Rush and Galvan Torques

    Abel Super Series 78N

    Bauer Super Mackenzies

    Hatch reels

    Orvis Reels

    Sage Reels,

    Ross reels (Momentum and Evolution)

    Nautilus reels

There are a lot of reels that will fit your needs for a dependable drag system, maybe take your fly rod into some of the fly shops and put the reels on your rod. Play with the reels a little (take it apart, look at the drag) tighten and loosen the drag- see how it feels on your rod and in your hands. Have fun shopping

  3. So anyone able to help with this strange situation...

I hope I can explain it well enough...

Our computers keep randomly shutting down when connected to our wireless network (but not when hardwired). So thinking it was my (previous) router (tenant was also having issues and had to keep resetting the router - a Hawking), I bought a new router (Apple Airport Base Stn) in the fall, in hopes that it would solve the issue but the issue still persisted. So then thinking it was the computer, I had someone look at it (known logic board issue with this model - '06/07 Mac iBook) and there were no issues found- seemed to work fine for him...

So last week for some reason it wasn't shutting down, which was strange as it usually shuts down pretty regularly, so I checked the signal and noticed it was connected to some random wifi signal from the neighborhood (not sure how that happened)... As soon as I connected back to ours, it would randomly shut down, again (so back to the random neighborhood wifi and it doesn't shut down). Also noticed that the Apple router will blink to yellow (normal is green) randomly as well, so need to reset it when this happens.

So anyone have an idea what is happening and why? I was told it could be the Shaw modem?!

    Any thoughts or advice?!

    Thanks in advance.

Peter, it is your computers way of telling you nicely to get off the computer and to go outside and take the dog for a walk.

  4. Yeah you are right... I just tried to google it and it came up on a obscure site, but not the Winston site Seems it's a few years old). Apparently you get a Boron IIx?!

It's seems it's a Sage One now - which is the current TU deal...

Peter, I think you are looking at the Trout Unlimited website from the States.

Here is the link for Trout Unlimited Canada in regards to the membership. It appears the Lifetime membership went up to $1500 as of March 1st

  5. Thanks for clarifying, Taco. TU Canada gives a "premium Winston or Orvis rod" with the purchase of a lifetime membership. Was wondering if anyone knew which rod. It used to be the BIIx years ago.

It should be one of their Premium rods that they offer. I have had two friends who recently purchased the lifetime memberships. One received a BIIISX 8wt and the other chose a 10wt (not sure the model)

  6. Wayne, check out Surveyors Lake in southern B.C. A short distance from Fernie. The beach is great, I think all of your requirements are met and there are turtles in the lake that should keep the kids entertained and Bass that could keep you entertained. The campground gets very busy in the summer months though.

We didn't stay right at Surveyor's but we were in the Kikkoman Creek Provincial Park group camp for a family Reunion. We swam in Lake Koocanusa, watched the turtles in Surveryor's lake and a much smaller lake, kids were able to ride their bikes around. They have great showers and washrooms and you really are a short drive to Fernie.

Lots of fishing in the area as well,

We were there August Long weekend, and it was busy but with a little walk you could get away from the crowds especially around the lake.

  7. I just did duct tape and it worked. Best rope I've found is used climbing rope. Can get cheaper than pretty well any other, and is almost indestructible

    x2

I used electrical tape to run it through the system.

I picked up the rope from MEC; just take in a small piece of your existing anchor rope to compare for size.

  8. A budy and I are going to Cuba soon, we are wondering about Rod rentals. The spot we are going to is out of the way and do not offer quality Rods or Fly's. The Fly's and leaders are not an issue however we do not want to purchase rods for just one trip. I am taking my 6wt for bones but am looking for a 11 or 12 for larger Tarpon. Has anyone been through this dilemma? Please advise.

    Thanks

You should look at mpurchasing your own gear, you can get yourself into some less expensive rods and reels that will do the trick. You should have a 8wt as previously mentioned, your 6wt will under gunned for even casting in the winds down on the flats let alone hooking into a larger bonefish. Maybe if your were going to Belize the 6wt could be brought out as a lightweight/ultralight set up for the smaller bones. But Cuba has a larger average size of bonefish.

Maybe look at a fast action 10wt, that will get you through the permit fishing and smaller tarpon. Personally I would prefer to chase tarpon in the smaller sizes (upto 50-60lbs) as they still fight awesome but won't kick the shite out of you after one fish, you will want to catch a couple more. That is just my opinion though, catching the huge ones would be cool too, but your energy levels can done for the day after one fish if you are able find one.

Believe me, this won't be your one and only trip, you will addicted and will be finding ways to get yourself back into the salt. Spend more on your 8wt as you will be able to use it here for streamer fishing, pike, walleye, bull trout and even carp. A lot of manufacturers like Winston, Sage, Loomis, TFO, Redington, etc offer a budget conscious saltwater capable set ups for you that will cost you a little more than renting. With renting, you will be responsible for warranty claims for breakage and replacing reels if they aren't returned in satisfactory condition (just my experience with renting/borrowing gear)

Hope this helps a little, regardless go have some fun.

  9. Well I keep trying to get out fishing with BBT or that Devlin guy, looking at them for sure tells you that they ain't human and they don't walk on all fours so that eliminates the potential of being canines

Not sure what they are to tell you the truth.........

  10. I have a pair with the rose color lens and have worn them for many years of fishing and for shooting sporting clays. They offer a nice contrast in brighter light situations.

I just purchased a pair in the HT lense and like them more than the rose. I haven't found them to let in too much light on the brighter days and are ver very good in low light situations. They are prescriptions and I need them for driving. I forgot my regular glasses one evening after my sons indoor soccer game and ended up using the sunglasses instead. With the street lights being the only source of light I didn't find the HT lenses too dark.
