I am a big fan of Project Healing Waters; in fact in our 2008 film "The One", I produced a segment on PHW. It is a great cause and I would be honored to be a part of the benefit.” - Carter Davidson, Gray Ghost Productions, The Good Life: Tale Tails from the East “I would be more than happy for you to show my film whenever and wherever you want. And things move right along smartly.” - Larry Kenney, Writer and Fly Fishing Video & Gear Reviewer “There's something almost voyeuristic, indeed sensual, about the act of fly fishing. People who have never touched a fly rod, or any other kind of rod, will stop to watch an accomplished fly caster swoosh sinuous loops of line between sky and water. Now, with the DVD release of Why Fly Fishing, you can peer straight into the eyes of fly fishing luminaries who espouse the fundamental, the philosophical and the spiritual, and begin to grasp what's so all-fired transfixing about such a seductive sport.” - Don Roberts, Founding editor of Flyfishing The West “The film evokes the beauty of the environment in which fishing takes place. I love the way you got Joan, John, Nick, Flip and everyone else to express their love of fly fishing and see many of them actually doing it. You couldn't have chosen better folks. My daughter said it's the best fishing DVD she's ever seen, and she doesn't praise often.” - Dave Hughes, Author and Editor of Flyfishing & Tying Journal “Why Fly Fishing beautifully illuminates numerous wide-ranging aspects that make fly fishing a lifestyle choice for so many of us—the science, the craft, the art, the poetry, the spiritual, the losing of one's self, the finding of one's self. It’s poised as a classic Felt Soul production, with a great soundtrack and beautiful scenery. Kamchatka is one of the world’s most spectacular and remote places, countless unnamed rivers holding the land together in silver bends, and it looks every bit that good here unfolding in a tight, funny narrative." - Matthew Beaudin, Telluride Daily Planet " Eastern Rises was a stunningly beautiful look at one of the last truly wild places left on this ever shrinking, little blue orb we call home." - Urban Fly Ventures Blog Felt Soul Media _________________________________________________________________ "DVD's are cool but nothing can compare to seeing something on the big screen with a couple of hundred cheering fishermen" - Nick Reygaert ___________________________________________________________________ Cardel Theatre, 180 Quarry Park Blvd SE Two screenings, one matinee and one evening. 12. Hi everyone, We managed to get the November issue of our newsletter out to our subscribers earlier this month, just hours before we left for a bit of a holiday. We’ve been off the grid since then. However, as of today, we’ve begun updating our Blog, Twitter feed and Facebook Page. Back to the newsletter: As of this morning, the three most popular items have been the new Alberta-based fly fishing website, the three new on-line fly fishing magazines and the new video on Project Healing Waters Canada that was produced during the summer by local fly fisher Rick Harding of The Fly Fishing Life dot com. For those looking to purchase a drift boat, there are two listings, including one first-time listing. Yes, I know it’s -24C out there. But it’s never too early to start planning for the next season. “The Stimulator” e-newsletter is part of my Community Support Program and is available at no charge to any interested person. To have your copy delivered to your email inbox, please send your request to michelle@bowrivershuttles.com
  13. Earlier today, we had shuttles to or from all of the boat launches along the lower Bow River (except 17th): Glenmore, 22X, Police, Mac, Legacy and Cars. Now it's time for our annual family Thanksgiving dinner. Happy Thanksgiving to everyone! 22X/Fish Creek Park McKinnon Flats Legacy Island Carseland
  14. Rickr, thank you for suggesting that this post be moved. Thanks to those who were able to take part in the Bow River cleanup. One of the participants was Chris D. He picked up 3½ bags of thrash in the area downstream of the Ivor Strong bridge, on both sides of the river. His haul included 112 bottle caps, 72 pieces of Styrofoam, one BBQ top lid, 5 car parts, 34 miscellaneous pieces of plastic, plus lots more stuff. The GCSC wrapped up last Sunday. Here is a press release from earlier this week reporting on the success of this event. 15. Love your shoreline, love your community Join the Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup The 1St Annual "Blue Ribbon Bow River Cleanup" September 18 & 19, 2010 The Bow River, between Calgary and Carseland, has a well deserved reputation in the fly fishing community of being a world class "blue ribbon" trout stream. However, there are some who float the Bow who seem oblivious to this, and who treat our river as a garbage dump. One long time fly fisher, Peter C., sent us a fishing report back in August. At the end of his report, he wrote: "It is disappointing to see all the trash left by weekend floaters - broken glass, food hampers and left over float tubes and clothing. My dog was lucky not to cut his feet. I wonder what the landowners think? Will we get banned from using the river bank? By the time I reached McKinnon's I had a garbage bag full of junk. It just p--s me off to see the abuse of the river bank. All we seem to be able to do is pick up other people's trash." We invite all Bow River fly fishers to join hands in a "Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup" (GCSC) event scheduled for the weekend of Sept 18 & 19 - The 1st Annual "Blue Ribbon Bow River Cleanup". Take along a pair of canvass gloves, a few garbage bags and a pen or pencil on your float trip that weekend. See if you can match Peter C.'s efforts by leaving your reach of river a little bit cleaner that you found it on that particular day. If you're planning a walk and wade trip anywhere along the lower Bow River, consider doing the same. This event applies to any section of the river, from the Glenmore Trail/Graves Landing boat launch to Johnson Island at Carseland Weir. To be part of this event, GCSC asks each participant for two things: 1. All participants MUST sign the Liability Waiver 2. Participants fill out and submit their Data Card, which is a record of what garbage was picked up. After your participation in this event, I would ask that you please scan and email your completed Waiver forms and Data Cards to michelle@bowrivershuttles.com. As the volunteer "GCSC Site Coordinator" for this event, I will compile the results from the Data Cards into the Group Summary Card and submit that to GCSC. We encourage everyone who is planning to be on the Bow River on that weekend to make of point of signing up and being part of this national campaign! To register for this event, please contact me with your interest as soon as possible. I will send you the Waiver form and the Data Card. Thank you. Kindest regards, Michelle Magotiaux Garbage Pickup: i) Fish Creek Provincial Park and Wyndham-Carseland Provincial Park: The managers of the Provincial Parks have notified their respective contractors that there might be extra garbage at those boat launches on that weekend. ii) McKinnon Flats: Alberta Conservation Association has advised their contractor of the same. iii) Policeman's Flats and Legacy Island: Bow River Shuttles will pick up garbage at those sites. The Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup is the largest cleanup in Canada and one of the largest cleanups in the world contributing to the Ocean Conservancy's International Coastal Cleanup. Since inception of the program, nearly one million kilograms of shoreline litter has been removed from our fragile ecosystem. Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup Be a Data Detective
  16. Hi everyone, The August issue of “The Stimulator” has a good mix of news that we think will be of interest to many of you. Trout Unlimited Canada asked us to help spread the word about the search for their “2011 Artist of the Year”. Western Sky Land Trust would like to see the fly fishing community represented at their upcoming “Watershed Forum” in September. This event is subtitled “Increasing Capacity for Watershed Conservation”. We’ve also included a reminder for our “call for entries” to our Back Cast Fly Fishing Film Festival, which is coming up in February. This part of our film festival is geared toward amateur film makers, and proceeds will benefit Project Healing Waters Canada. The segments which have generated the most interest to date include “Jet Boat Woes on the Bow (2010 edition)”, the two new Alberta-based fly fishing blogs, and the four new fly fishing e-magazines. The latter segment includes “Fly Fusion” magazine, published by the local Bird family. There are six listings under “Drift Boats for Sale”, including three new ones. “The Stimulator” e-newsletter is part of my Community Support Program and is available at no charge to any interested person. 18. Hi everyone, We’ve been “off the grid” for awhile, attending a family funeral in Saskatchewan. I did not get around to posting this prior to our departure. I realize that, as I write this, this is the final day of June. However, many of the segments in my June newsletter “The Stimulator” are not date-sensitive, and might be of interest to you. Feedback to this point tells us that the "Broken Tippet Forums", “Fly Fishing & Literature”, and “Gulf of Mexico Oil Spill” segments were of most interest to many readers, as was the segment “Fly Fishing & Kids”, which provides details of two different Summer Camp options for children and youth. Also, there are eight listings under “Drift Boats for Sale”. This newsletter is part of my Community Support Program and is available at no charge to any interested person. 22. View large poster here http://i39.tinypic.com/dbk2g7.png Hello, Please consider participating in this event and forwarding the information on to like minded organizations and individuals. Wild Salmon in BC - Are they important to you? Alexandra Morton is a biologist who has been documenting and communicating the impacts of salmon farming on wild salmon for the last 20 years http://alexandramorton.typepad.com/ . After all those years of scientific work, and recently rigorous legal action, she has decided it is time for activism. Nothing else is working. No matter what her and her colleagues do or say, it is clear that the government does not understand the harm that salmon farming is doing to our coast and that OUR salmon trump farmed salmon, owned by Norwegian salmon farming corporations. So, Alex Morton and a group of us have decided to do a large Migration. It's called the Get Out Migration. We are walking from our homes on Malcom Island to Victoria, British Columbia (~500kms) to raise awareness to our government about the importance of wild salmon and to demand that salmon farms get off the migration routes of wild salmon, because they cause disease epidemics and pollute the nearshore habitat. We are walking from April 22 to May 9. On May 9 we'll arrive in Victoria and will walk to the Parliament building where we will be received by MP Finn Donnelly. He'll receive our petitions and celebrate wild salmon with us. It is important he sees the efforts of the walk, but also on the internet and around the world. The whole point of this is to stand up and be counted - whether that is electronically, in written form or in person. People across Vancouver Island (and the world) are being amazing - inviting us into their homes, planning their own Migrations to join up with us, booking community halls for Salmon Celebrations...it's going to be two intense but beautiful weeks on the road and on-line. If you, your organization or your students want to let the federal government know that wild salmon are more important to you than farmed salmon, I encourage you too to stand up and be counted: - You can sign the petition at http://salmonaresacred.org/petition-protect-wild-salmon - You can print out a card to mail to MP Finn Donnelly on the Fisheries Standing Committee at http://salmonaresacred.org/downloads (mailing the Feds is free!) - You can sign a letter to the Fisheries Minister to hold salmon farms to Canadian fisheries laws - http://www.adopt-a-fry.org/ - You can check the Migration's website and go to an event in your community, participate in Forum discussions and watch our Migration's progress - You can organize a Salmon Celebration event in your community - OR you can join us on any part of the walk! We'd love anyone and everyone in any shape or form. If you live on the Island, or want to come out for this, our itinerary is currently: 22nd April - Broughton Archipelago/Alert Bay/Sointula 23rd April – Sointula/Port McNeill 24th April - Nimpkish Lake 25th April - Zeballos Junction 26th April - Woss 27th April - Sayward 28th April - Quadra Island 29th April - Campbell River/Courtenay/Comox 30th April - Big Qualicum River/Parksville 1st May - Port Alberni 2nd May - Nanaimo 3rd May - Ladysmith/Saltspring Island 4th May - Saltspring Island 5th May - Duncan 6th May - Bamberton 7th May - Sidney/Saanich 8th May – Victoria 9th May - Victoria The Migration's website is http://salmonaresacred.org. Paddlers can join us by boat as we cross from Sointula to Port McNeill, go through the Discovery Islands from Sayward to Quadra, rally in the habours of any of the towns we are having events in (especially Victoria's inner harbour) or they can create their own Migration events on their favorite bodies of water. Simply photograph your Migration event and send it to us, we'll deliver it to the politicians in Victoria. Please contact us at this address for coordination opportunities. If you have the time, any help networking this would be amazing. Please send those petition links and the Migration website onto your colleagues, friends and lists etc. The more that Canadians are given a chance to tell the government how the feel, the better chance we'll have at getting these farms off our coast. For our wild fish, The Get Out Migration Team http://www.salmonaresacred.org/

  24. McKinnon Flats We had a few clients floating various river reaches yesterday, and we were doing pickups and drop offs at all of the boat launches, from Graves Landing/Glenmore Trail through to McKinnon Flats. While we were at it, we took some extra time and toured the bottom end of the “Blue Ribbon Bow”. Please see photos below. There is now an opening through the ice wall at McKinnon Flats. It’s directly in front of the “ramp”. One or two trailers have been backed right into the water. I don’t know if a 4X4 is required, but it’s probably a good idea. There were five or six fly fishers strung out along the water in front of the ice. A very peaceful sight. Legacy Island has not yet been used. But it likely won’t be long before someone gives it a try. The ice has melted almost to the river bottom directly in front of the ramp. The top of the ramp is as ugly as ever, in terms of being lumpy, bumpy and muddy. I think this is a 4X4 ramp, at least until everything dries out, and maybe even after. Carseland boat launch is now good to go. Happy Fishing! Kindest regards, Michelle Magotiaux 403-278-9165 McKinnon Flats Legacy Island Carseland
