  1. The first year of engineering was a tough go, but nothing compared to the 'real world'. No more 4 months off with a half ass summer job. No more arranging courses so Fridays start at 11, and finish at 2. No more ah screw it, I'll skip the afternoon and go fishing...As a few have said before, enjoy it now, because it only gets worse.
  2. I really liked the new venue. Definitely more space, and not as crammed in as in the Maxbell. Went last night which was nice because it wasn't as busy, so I had plenty of time to chat with everyone at the displays. Came out of there a few hundred dollars lighter buying some SA lines and fly tying tools and supplies that were all heavily discounted. Put a few more (too many) things on the wish list. I saw the Hardy booth and should have just kept on walking...lots of nice toys there.
  3. I'm not sure a 5 star resort of this scale will ever work in the pass. The area just doesn't really lend itself to becoming a profitable high end resort of any magnitude. The lake is too cold and the area is too windy for most water sports on the lake. There is no high end skiing without traveling to BC. The train goes right past the area at pretty much any time of day, there's significant highway noise. there are no quality golf courses in the immediate area, it's 2 hours away from the nearest international airport etc. etc. 5 star natural beauty yes, amenities to accommodate a 5 star resort no.
  4. Should the cost of having the 'privilege' to fish Alberta waters be increased? 2007 Alberta Resident: Under 16 $0.00 16 - 64 $22.50 65+ $0.00 WIN Card $8.00 (Valid for 5 years) Under 16: $0.00 for both kids to fish $495.00 for a 6 day summer camp for a single child $150.00 for a session of karate lessons (15 lessons) for a single child 16 - 64 $22.50 for my annual license $30.50 if I need to renew my WIN card $50.00 about what it costs to fill up my vehicle with fuel for 1 week $65.00 - 100.00 about what it costs for a single round of golf around Calgary 65+ You've been paying out the nose all your life, I figure you deserve the break I'd be willing to pay more for my license, and have to buy licenses for both of my kids, especially if these additional funds went directly to supporting Alberta fisheries by way of habitat restoration, purchasing of land to prevent development in sensitive areas, angler education, and enforcement etc.
  5. Nice pattern, similar style to a comet, but dressed more heavily like a booby. I bet this is a killer fly for salmon in larger sizes. What other colours do you tie them in, I bet olive and claret would also work well.
  6. Thought this was the same thread as the buying flies thread. Sorry rickr. I understand that the flies at hanson's are tied on site so I'm sure the quality is very good. If you're looking for decent flies at a good price you can't go wrong with either Wholesale or CT. That said, I understand there a few sponsors on this board providing flies, it's always good to support them
  7. If you'll be using the articulated flies for salmon in BC you'll only be allowed a single barbless hook. Most of the flies I've tied like this have a large cheap hook for the front hook because it gets cut, and a Gamakatsu for the trailer. The trailer is connected to the front shank using fireline. The fireline is looped at least once through the eye and around the hook of the trailer. The tags are then secured to the shank of the front with threadwraps and head cement. When you secure the material to the rear hook, avoid having to much length on the material so that it doesn't extend to far past the trailer, this will keep it front getting fouled. I'm assuming you're tying a rabbit strip style pattern, and not an intruder? oh yeah be careful when you cut the hook off the front shank. Point the end towards a garbage, this piece of metal shoot out like a mother fu*#er.
  8. I think Wholesale has them for something like $12.00/ dozen. The Canadian Tire selection is a little weak, but I've never found the quality of their flies to be an issue.
