  1. are you using an UV light to dry it? I haven't noticed any smell on mine.
  2. Thanks guys for the tips. I do not know where exactly I will be posted, my training will be in Manning, but after that, I could be roaming around a bit, depending on what happends this summer, fire wise. I will def bring the flyrod with me, just in case I get some doent time near by some water. thanks
  3. I will be heading up to the Peace River area for the summer to do some wildfire fighting. Has anyone ever fished there?? I assume there are plenty of lakes and offcourse the peace river, are they any good for fishing? Any tips would be awesome! thanks, Mike
  4. I know it is a little early to be thinking of the Highwood again, I can't wait!! My dad will be visiting me this summer, june 22nd, and I would love to take him fishing there. when does the river open again? And does anyone know when the Pickeljar lakes are open?? Thanks Mike
  5. Thanks guys for the input. And thanks for the link MTB! Some good opinions about it, and I don't know where I stand with it. I can see both ways. As a fisherman, my goal is to try and catch fish, besides being outside and enjoying great scenry and quiet etc. And if this "tool" can assist me with that than I might look up some more info on it, or maybe try to hook up with someone that has experience. Mike
  6. I read a few times about these pumps, and I think it might be very helpfull for me. I am not really keened in on all the hatches that are going on, and some of the flies that I have, I don't even remember the name. So if I can have a visual of what buddy down there is actually eating... I think that might really benfit me. Can anyone tell me a little more about them, how they work, what they cost, wher to get them etc. Like the other day, I fished for an hour or so, had one hit on a dry. Than switched to a backswimmer, and had 3 fish on on 5 minutes, was really cool. Than the next day...nothing! So it seems that they are getting more and more picky now. I might be wrong. Thanks!!
  7. where is blood indian?? do you need special permission ?? Looks great.
  8. i used to have those "plastic" cheap hip waders frm crappy tire, which are the same as wallmart. yes thay are cheap, and they can serve the purpose, but what I found last year, is that those things roast you alive if you do a bit of walking and wading...woow.. Your pants/shorts and socks will be through and through soaked after a days fishing, that you might as well just step into the water with shorts on. Plus the boots kinda suck, super slippery on the wet rocks. And the edge of where teh boot is attached to the wader, has a sharp ridge which has cut me really deep into my calf last year after walking for hours. I felt something hurting, but never bothered to check it until the end of teh day....woops. This year I picked up a pair of neoprenes from Russels sports bu heritage...$84 so that's not bad at all, and they are pretty comfy. I wear my hiking shoes with them. If you don't have any, check out Winners or somethign like that, and pick up an simple or cheap pair of hiking boots, and you can stick on one of those anti-slip things if yu want. about wading safety.... I was kinda being an idiot myself today... Went to cross a bit of water to reach a bank in the middle of the river.seemed pretty shallow to get there, and wasn't too bad. Was surprised with the power of the water, didn't look that strong. Mad it over no probs though. Back was different. Kinda lost where I crossed, and started to cross, and found myself getting deeper and deeper. To a pont where I felt uncomfortable, and was having more difficulty making my next step. Water is definatly moving!! So backed up...did this twice before I found my shallower cross point. Won't do that again...doesn't take much to go for a swim. So safety tips... For what I have experience for myself. bring a stick or cane or whatever. That way you can check the depth in front of you before you step, and gives you extra ballance, essepcially on slippery rocks. And in my case today, with a stick, I would have been able to push myself back once I got too deep, way easier. Second, if you plan to cross like I did, and found a safe way to do so...make sure you landmark where you crossed. Sounds easy, but could make things a lot easier if you do so. Waders can be scarry and dangerous I think. once they get filled with water, they become like a sea anchor. Don't try to fight it, cause you will lose!! take a deep breath, stay calm and try to get ridd of your waders. So if you are wearing shoes, I would not put double knots in therem so you can yank them easily. Migth be worth having to ret-tie a couple times. Than get your waders of or down at least. Depending on what kind you have. Maybe wear a knife that you can reach easily and cut it off. if it comes to my life or my waders.... pretty clear... Try to stay calm, and get a breath where you can, don't try to swim. you will lose energy and oxygen fast that way. Dump your stuff first. Good topic, i think it can be very underestimated.
  9. wow, cool pictures !! Good to see the bear walk away.
  10. Is that 2nd picture at the Crowsnest? I think that is the spot where I first learned to flyfish, in April 2 years ago. Was still brown from runoff, so wasn't great. If so, could anyone tell me where that is, or how to get there? I forgot where to turn off. thanks Mike
  11. tough day, but you got a nice fish in the end anyway! I was wondering about fishing downtown the other day. I live near Edmonton trail and 5th ave, so I am very close to the river. I have seen a few people fish near the bridge by edm trail. Just wondering if it is anyone from FFC?? If so, having any luck there? I have been meaning to try it, but evry time I find time to fish, i head out to the Bow down south or to the Highwood.

    Mullard

that is a mullet for sure, not sure what kind since there are different kinds. They are a nice strong fish. And in Holland, ( as Iam Dutch) we call them " Harder" They do actually swim up river estuaries, so sometimes you can catch them in fresh water or brackkish water. (also make a great bait for other bigger predators, Roosterfish love 'm) I would love to target them on the flyrod.
  13. where was the yellowfin? That's my favorite fish!! Pure powerhouse. I started offshore fishing when I was a boy, and it's in my blood. I really like the change over from ocean to beautifull scenery like the Highwood area etc. Nice pic's! By the way, what is a good pike water?
  14. I have recently been fishing the Highwood, and got some nice fish. I have seen some nice bullies in the pools, any tips for a Bull??
  15. thanks for all the replies, that's awesome. So what do you think my chances are fishing from shore? I guess it's better getting a float and get to the deeper part of the lake, but I won't have access to one right now. What is the tout population in there. I wanted to try the Wedge and maybe some other little ponds and lakes before I make my way down to fish the Highwood. I absolutely love it there in the canyons!! just breathtaking and so cool to see the fish in that clear water coming up for your fly.
  16. I wanted to try out Wedge pond down by Hwy 40. I hear it has been stocked with Arctic Greyling. Has anyone ever fishef for them before? If anyone could give me some pointers, that would be great!! I have never fished for them before. Thanks!
