New Fly Fisher Needs Advice From The Pro's

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

New friends are taking me out on Monday for my first fly fishing lesson!!! I CAN"T WAIT! I have wanted to learn for sooo long. I am so glad I joined the forum, I have trolled and found some great ideas.

Can you pass on some tips? Is there a specific trick of the wrist?

Thanks and Happy Fishing!

Hi Michelle,

Glad to see you are so exciteed about the first lesson. I would say you are already hooked. :D

If you are interested to learn a bit more about casting techniques, Midcurrent has some videos to watch: http://www.midcurrent.com/video/videos.aspx

In their first one, Joan Wulff presents hand and arm movements (wrist included), http://www.midcurrent.com/video/clips/wulff_dynamics_04.aspx

YouTube is also a good source, but there you need to know what you are looking for.

Enjoy your first FF outing and let us know how it felt.

Cheers,

Bandee

One tip I still have to remind myself is to watch my backcast and make sure the line is almost all extended before making the forward cast, you'd be surprised at how long you have to pause at 2 o'clock on the casts. If you can, try taking one lesson from a pros/guide unless your friends are good teachers. Sometimes it's nice to not pick up bad habits from the start. I'm taking Jim McLennan's course this Sunday, can't wait!

It's nice to see that even the teachers get caught in the trees sometime! Thank you, that was very helpful. What a great site.

Good advice, I may just do that. If you can let me know how Sunday goes.

Taking a lesson through one of the shops in town or someone like the McLennans (Lynda also teaches) is probably the best way to go. If you learn from a friend who has bad casting habits, then you'll probably pick those up as well. If you want to give it a try with friends before investing in a lesson, start out casting on the grass in an open field with wool at the end of your leader instead of a fly. That way you're only concentrating on the casting technique and not fish or getting caught in trees and other obstacles (or putting a hook in yourself). Then move onto the water, but still using wool instead of a fly until you get the basic casting mechanics down. Tough to resist getting out and fishing right away, but it's easier to learn the right way now than break bad casting habits later on.

Thats easy. When i started my casting was all over. Snapping my wrist, bad loops etc. Till the day i got duct taped to my reel seat. Learned my lesson real quick.Think everytime i cast now i feel the tape being pulled off. It worked. :toilet:
