I've been told by more than one that an effective pattern for Maligne Lake is a double shrimp. Apparently they sell it at the local Jasper tackle shops. I can't find a picture or any refference to it online. Does anybody know anything about it? Fished it? Have one? I have a feeling it's in the same class as a Doc Spratley / damsel nymph / dragon nymph / hegramite, but I would really like to see one.

It's just a fullback nymph pattern, usually tied on a 2x or 3x long hook. The reason they call it a double shrimp, is that the pheasant tail full back is tied down in the middle to give it a "double hump" look. I might have one some where, and if I come across it, I'll post a picture.

My "go to" pattern for Maligne Lake is a Spratley Nymph. Again, it's a big long fullback nymph (classical style -- i.e. not tied in the middle) with a Spratley type body. That is, dubbed black body, palmered black hackle, and silver tinsel rib. Have fun if you're headed to Maligne this summer, it's a gorgeous place to fish. Terry

The older experienced guides Lorne, Fred call them Double tie downs. Terry called it right tho, it is a full back nymph tied down in the middle.

The pattern i know is a brown hackle palmered over a body dubbed with red seal. seal is most important according to the most knowledgable guides in the area. Try fishing with some minnow patterns tied with Polar bear as well. deadly

Are you thinking of making something to imitate this?

I have been wondering about that also. If you find a fly pic...please post it.

Yup to all of the above.

Basic pattern

Tail- tips of pheasant tail

Body-peacock hearl or arizona sparkle or seal hair.

Rib- orange ostrich hearl (optional but deadly).

Hackle - brown hackle 1.5 x the size of gap.

Shell Back - pheasant tail, i also stretch a piece of clear scud back over the pheasant for durability.

Couple of turn of thread 1/2 way and whip finish.

Last year we found a spot with tons of brookies and decided to experinment, we both use the same sinking lines stripped of the same amount of line I tied on the the ostrich ribbed double shrimp and my partner used the same pattern but not split in the middle. they both were identical ties except for the divided body and the the standard pattern was at least 3-1. Go figure!!!!
