CanuckCamper Posted March 2, 2011 Posted March 2, 2011 I'm looking to pick up 2 or 3 types of feathers to start tying some soft hackle flies. Any recommendations on the type(s) to start with? Thanks for any help. CC Quote
TerryH Posted March 2, 2011 Posted March 2, 2011 Pick up a starling skin -- the hackle is good to for tying small soft hackles. Terry Quote
CanuckCamper Posted March 3, 2011 Author Posted March 3, 2011 Thanks for the input I will pick up a Hungarian partridge skin. Any idea where in town to find a starling skin? Thanks, CC Quote
Guest 420FLYFISHIN Posted March 3, 2011 Posted March 3, 2011 just DONT BUY the bags of feathers!! they are full of fluff and unusable feathers (over 50% garbage in my opinion) Quote
Guest Dennis59 Posted March 4, 2011 Posted March 4, 2011 Hungarian Partridge for sure the skin and make sure wings still on. Next would the Starling full skin again with the wings on. Then a couple of hen necks and saddles. The wings are very important if you do any extensive reading on soft hackles a lot of them were tied with the wing feathers. If you can get them snipe wings are great and so are grouse wings. Tight lines Always. Dennis S Quote
