mvdaog Posted August 10, 2010 Posted August 10, 2010 Only time stands in the way of that fishery becoming crowded as well.... and oh well. Thats life with internet I guess. Hope I dont live long enough to see it altered... Quote
Heimdallr Posted August 10, 2010 Posted August 10, 2010 Taimen are so friggin awesome. Hopefully someday I'll be able to afford the trip. Quote
seanbritt Posted August 11, 2010 Posted August 11, 2010 Thanks for sharing! I saw a discovery show on taimen recently where there was a crew of biologists (of course, they were fly fisherman too:) that were studying them as the Mongolian govt. was going to preserve some of the watershed and wanted to know which stretch were the best for taimen. While they are migratory, many stay within the same stretch of river all their lives. An interesting note is that the Mongolian culture is more a red-meat culture than fish, as they were traditionally nomadic people. Hopefully that will help keep the pressure down. As for the fly-fishing outfit, there is only one in that stretch and they give a lot back to the community. In fact, there was a buddhist monastery that was burnt down and the money for the rebuild came mostly from the fly fishing community. And no, I'm not super knowledgeable, I just really enjoyed that documentary:) Quote
kungfool Posted August 11, 2010 Posted August 11, 2010 Country Pleasures offers trips to chase these bad boys. With luck I will make it out there for some fun. Quote
Gaffer Posted August 13, 2010 Posted August 13, 2010 There was an epidode of Monster Fish that featured these fish. Totally amazing. Hopefully the Buddist traditions of Mongolia will keep these fish safe for several generations. A Quote
