"EDMONTON — A public funeral will be held Saturday in Edmonton for the latest soldier to die from wounds suffered in Afghanistan.

 

Cpl. Darren James Fitzpatrick died during the weekend at the University of Alberta Hospital from injuries he received in an explosion in Afghanistan on March 6.

 

The 21-year-old, who had been on tour since October, was on a foot patrol with Afghan National Army soldiers when an improvised explosive device detonated.

 

Although Fitzpatrick and his family are from Prince George B.C., his funeral will be held at St. Joseph's Basilica, one of Edmonton's largest churches. Through the military, his family invited members of the public to attend. "
