creekside Posted March 15, 2010 Posted March 15, 2010 Howdy all. A couple question before I go ahead and take the plunge. 1: Will a 4 weight switch rod fell like a 9' 4 weight with an average fish on? 2: Any outstanding advantages for normal river Indy fishing ? 3: Can you effectively fish a hopper dropper rig? 4: I fish allot of small streams with minimal back cast room in heavy willows, will the extra lenght be an advantage or a hindrance due to the length of rod? headscan Posted March 15, 2010 Posted March 15, 2010 1. Depends on the switch rod. I think some use AFTMA ratings and others use "spey ratings". 2. A longer rod means better mending ability as long as you aren't using a heavy shooting head and mono running line. 3. Yes as long as you aren't trying to fish the opposite bank on a river like the Bow. 4. Probably a hindrance if there's a canopy/low branches. If you want the advantages of casting with minimal back cast room learn how to spey cast your single-handed rod instead. I personally wouldn't use a spey or switch on smaller streams, but that's just my opinion. Quote
chiasson Posted March 15, 2010 Posted March 15, 2010 Go for it! I got a 5 weight switch and dig it. Make sure to do some research and seek some experienced advice on how to best line your particular rod for the fishing you want to do before buying a line(s); switches can be tricky to line. Quote
