  1. I'm looking for a good 5wt rod at a mid-range price, as my old rod is a little past its time. I understand that there are a lot of options out there but wanted some opinions maybe based on some past experience. I have looked at rods such as the Orvis Recon and also the Douglas DXF as the reviews on those have been fairly high (Anyone here heard of Douglas or tried out any of their rods, given they are a relatively new company?)

Any help would be appreciated! Thanks :whipped:

  2. I'm headed to do some saltwater fishing this June in Mexico and am looking to buy a good saltwater rod/outfit in the mid-price range. Any suggestions? I will be fishing near the southern tip of Baja California in the Sea of Cortez. Thanks in advance!

  3. I'm looking for a fairly good quality reel for my 5wt in the $125 -$200 price range. Any suggestions on a reel that would fit the bill? I was looking at the Sage 2200 Series as well as the Orvis Access Mid Arbor. Need a hard working reel that doesn't break the bank. Thanks in advance!

  4. Welcome back to fishing!

A 5wt is great choice for a rod to start with, and will get the job done in many fishing situations here in Alberta! As far as set-ups/rod and reel combos go, the Orvis Encounter series or Clearwater series, at around $159, is good quality for a good price. Temple Fork's NXT series is also good, as well as Redington's Crosswater outfit ($140). I think Bass Pro has a starter outfit as well, but I would go with an outfit from a more well-known, respected fly fishing company.

Hope this helps and let me know if you need any more information! :kingswim:

  5. I had a question on the typical lifespan of Dacron backing. If the backing has been treated fairly well and has not been abused too much, how long will it last? Will the lifespan change if the reel/backing has been used in freshwater or saltwater? This is something I have wondered about and any answers would be appreciated. Thanks!
