Not to continue the hijack... I've never understood the reasoning behind a shorter rod for in tight situations either. I use 9' rods for Stauffer, hell-a-creeks everywhere. I've never been on a creek where a 9' rod won't work - at worst change the approach and positioning, and simply bow & arrow cast or dap in tight with the longer rod. A bow & arrow dap cast will be good within 20' of the fish, which is more than plenty if your approach is good. I don't know of any stream in Alberta that has a willow/alder canopy that you can cast under. The upper Mataura or mid Taieri in NZ might allow for side arm casting under the willow canopy, but I've honestly found tower and reach casts the most advantageous on Stauffer-like streams and a 9 footer allows for a lot of maneuvering. 9', 4wt, mid flex Helios for me. Formerly 8'8" G series Scott in 4wt, mid to full flex.
The wt, length, flex point, and energy to flex are all equally important in developing a feel that works for you.
Once you factor in your casting stroke, line speed in different situations, etc, you'll gain more appreciation of exactly what you are really after.
And yes, dt vs wf lines do make a difference, as well as who makes the line (materials used, taper dynamics, suppleness of line, etc) as these will be quite different and do different things for you in various situations.
I agree, in fact I like the longer rod to get the line OVER the tress and bushes along shore during my back cast.

Based on the weather predictions I've seen, June through August is supposed to be hotter and drier than average.

Wow, you guys are tying some nice streamers. Those zoo cougars are unreal.

I have backroads mapbook for my gps and I like it, but haven't really tried much else. The gps version of backroads has all the detail and more compared to the hardcopy version, including hiking, biking, horseback trails, campgrounds, topographic, very tiny streams and more. It's expensive though, especially considering you can download the free topographic maps online.

Too bad this thread went to *hit, I would have actually liked to see if people had experience doing this kind of work

Reminds me of my winters in Swift Current...bleak at best.

The body is pretty similar to a Goddard caddis. Maybe just follow those instructions for spinning the deer hair, then tie in the wing instead of hackle at the front?

nope, 2 different colors of pink (1 hot, 1 dull, both different sizes). I tie a SHAT load and for me it builds up on every perches. 1 here 2 there but it all adds up. Bass pro has not let me down nor has it impressed me with customer service, but i have never had a problem with whole sale....except finding pink thingemabobs...
I think that's what mnm meant, the "hot" pink is more expensive than the dull, even though they are both Ultra Wire. I had to pay more for the fl. chartreuse than the reg. chartreause and was a bit confused too.

Customer service is much better in the smaller shop. I'll pay extra cash for better service because I'd rather buy from somebody who is helpful. Usually I now what I need, but it's good to know there are knowledgable staff who can offer advice on alternative fly materials or tricks on the vice, or who actually know a little about the product they are selling. Wholesale is pretty good too, there's a couple of really good dudes working in there.
Bass Pro's fly department is a joke.

midgetwaiter ... agree 100% ... Here in the small burg of Coaldale, we sometimes get two and three copies of some fliers....first in the newspaper...then in with "Prairie Post" and sometimes in a flier drop....recently we got three from XYZ Corp (Home Depot I think) promoting their new line of green products. What a joke.
My point was that weenies make such a big deal about plastic bags and water bottles while our whole society is awash in waste be it from fossil fuel or from other resources like trees ... but weenies have a compulsive need to have a "cause" and water bottles and plastic bags are a good target. Like everyone here, I am all for conservation and reduction..just a little sick of "green this" and "green that" .. meaningless drivel these days.
We need to live and let live while reducing and conserving ... and forget about the green finger pointing.
I used to work for Canada Post and we sent a flier out telling everybody how the corporation was going green. Meanwhile, the bitch who runs the company pushes "admail" (or junk mail if you hate the stuff) as the future of Canada Post.
I agree that mass consumerism and excessive packaging are probably our biggest problem, but good luck changing that anytime soon. The global economy runs on waste. Everything is disposable, even cell phones. You have to start somewhere and I think plastic bottles and bags are a good start.

I tied a few of these up the other day. These ones have rubber but I also decided to tie a bunch more using stretch floss instead. I think I like the stretch floss better.

Oh and I usually tip around 70-$80 for a trip that cost, but it depends on the experience and whether the guide tried hard to get me to the fish.
-
-
I didn't mean to imply you shouldn't go on a guided trip if you can't cast x distance, but I just wanted you to know what to expect and you can decide to spend your money based on that. If money is tight it may be worth do a little fishing around coral heads and other structure with decievers and clousers.

I don't think you need to be an expert caster, but you do need more skill than what it takes to nymph the Bow. A buddy's brother just got back from Ascension Bay and he wasn't that experienced and only landed one bone. But he can't cast past 25 feet. There are times he needed a 40 ft cast at least. Then there's the wind. What line weight is the rod?

I tie in the antennae biots cause they look good to me, but I would keep fishing with a chewed stonefly anyway cause it would probably work even better!
