  1. Hey DHX,

    That's unreal! Good for you.

I can point you to a couple systems on the North island I've had some luck on - just send me a PM. And cross your heart with a needle in your eye. There is a ton of water there I haven't explored though that's on my list, I'm far from a local expert yet! But I know where I would live on the NI.

  2. I will keep a fish very occasionally if allowed. one specific put and take lake the fish are a really deep orange and taste awesome... Never bonk anything from our streams, except brookies. I usually do a Uclulet trip every couple of years with my dad, where we get plenty enough vacuum-packed salmon for the year.

  3. Hopefully a take-out boat ramp will be available above HP at St. Patrick's Island and a put-in/take-out below HP at 17 Ave SE/ Cushing Bridge that will be reopened to the public. The problem at this point in time is the need for a take-out point directly above the weir. No good answers for now.

Filled out the form. I emphasized my opinion re: the importance of these two potential launches as well as one below the bearspaw dam (like Stoney) to open up new (or old) stretches of the river again. As far as I am concerned this would be ideal and hopefully it is prioritized. The rest to me is just gravy.

  4. Don't know if I'm wrong or not but I caught a whitefish about 20 years ago or so in the Bow across from Edworthy. It pretty much fit the bill for the description of whirling disease. It was twisted off to one side had a big hump/lump just behind the shoulders and the tail was kind of shrunken. I thought that it was caused by the chemicals coming into the river at that spot because it was by the sewage outlet from the U of C.

    Interesting -

I got one smallish brown earlier this year and one rainbow last year at POL that fit the description as well, with kinked/misaligned/humpy rear spines and shrunk tails. Didn't think much of it before all this whirling disease stuff hit the news and I began reading up on it... That said the deformities could have been caused by something else. I didn't take a tissue sample from the poor bastards. Looked like this pic: https://goo.gl/images/pGj0xI

  5. I don't feel you are trolling.. I appreciate the conversation. It is what I asked for 😊

Well if I use your reasoning of putting one in the NW, we are arguing the opposite side of the same coin. From anywhere in the north of Calgary you can drive to and access the river from Glenmore trail. Even if it is inconvenient for you. As accessing the one at sikome is inconvenient for me.

As I mentioned I am not against adding one or 2 or 10 in the north as well. But if there are only going to be 2 there should be one at 194th and one in the north. Saying one shouldn't be at 194th because there is one 5kms away is a super slanted and short sighted view. Since there is a locked gate at sikome that they will not open and the rest of fish Creek Park to drive around. It is actually a 16km one way or 20kms the other for access.

Maybe a simpler solution would be to allow access to fish creek boat launch from the Sikome side? No infrastructure spend required. 22x - police is already a pretty short float. I agree it's a pain in the ass to have to head all the way up Deerfoot and back down bow bottom, but I don't think a new launch is an answer.

I think opening the (in some cases existing) NW launches and a launch just below Harvie passage would be ideal as they would open up new water.

  6. That's a good looking fly Aiptasia.

Re: switching flies - I usually don't bother, which might cost me the odd fish, but that's ok with me. I find the strip cadence, depth & angle are bigger factors. If you are less lazy than me, it might not be a bad idea...

I've been playing around with some of the techniques in "Strip Set" by George Daniel. I picked it up on Kindle before a long flight a couple months ago. It can be a slow read at times but definitely a wealth of knowledge in there. I'm sure he has more sophisticated streamer advice than me!

  7. Just one more thing - don't be afraid to go back at that same fish if you miss it. I had a couple fish slash at the streamer last night, which gave up their spot. I gave it a couple minutes, switched up the casting angle (from snaking downstream to swinging and dangling in the lie from upstream) and whammo. If they don't feel the steel there is a good chance you can still get 'em.

  8. Hi there,

In the market for a mid-range 5wt and looking for any recommendations? Currently looking at a G Loomis Pro 4X or Douglas DXF. Can't afford to go top end, even though I fish a lot. That said, saw a Sage One on sale for $700.

    Thanks in advance.

I've got the pro4x in a 4 weight and really like it for dry fly fishing. It's a sweet stick for the price. Have never cast the 5 weight. Their warranty program is a bit of a pain in the ass - when I bought I had a "wildcard", which was essentially a one-time no fault free of charge replacement guarantee. They discontinued the program (after I had bought!) and they didn't honour the wildcard. I had to pay a good chunk >$100 to get the rod fixed. So you would want to read up on whatever their current warranty program is.

That said, it only broke because it got stepped on in the boat. I have broken my 6 weight bvk at least once in every section. It's now a Frankenstein of various blanks.

  9. I totally agree they need to pivot to the middle. Uniting the right, if it means a pivot right, will not earn my vote. I think the federal election showed brand Harper is broken. unless they put someone likeable up as the face of the PC party I would say they don't have a great shot. Why Kenney? Pinkster I would say as a "swing" voter that the PC brand isn't strong, they have some major work to do.

  10.

Was out fishing the area on the weekend and ran into a CO who was giving RVers their 2 week notices. She was posting notices on the RV doors if they were absent and noting plates, descriptions, etc. Seems like enforcement on the eastern slopes is taking another step in the right direction.

    Great news!

  11. Here is my two cents! I am not happy with the new rules that have been put into place at all. You have to pre-book all tributaries to the Elk in advance...dont go there thinking that you can buy your tag the same day and fish the wigwam!!! But, I do go there with my wife and fish all day long for an extra $40.00 bucks a day. If I golf for 4 hours in BC or Alberta at a nice course, it cost me $85-$120 per person!!! Because of this extra sir charge of $20.00 per angler and having to book way in advance I will limit my time spent there. It seams that this is what the government of BC wants as well as the guides in BC...let me explain! Lets say "Tim" drives down from Montana this year and wants to fish Michel! He goes into the fly shop to buy his tag only to find out that there are none left to buy because the gov has limited the access to the river...but wait...the guided days on Michel and all other rivers have been upped so "Tim" is now offered a guided trip! The amount of out of province anglers have decreased in a huge way. Out of province also means out of country!!! Wait, are we in the same boat as the good old USA....cant be!!! But it is true. I have booked all my days already, a bill for my wife and I of almost $450.00 for the season. BUT WAIT! What if it rains? What if the river is not fishable? What if, what if, what if? You cant get a refund! Last year I was standing in line in Sparwood at 9am at the government building to buy my tags for the new system...the lady was awesome, she logged in and told me there were 14 tags for Michel left. She punched in my number I bought my tag...about 5 minutes latter I asked her to do the same for my two friends that were driving down the next day to meet me. I gave her their numbers and she requested the day BUT WAIT...it was now SOLD OUT! We can not fish together unless I eat the $20 bucks and book a different stream. We ended up floating the Elk. Sorry to be long winded but if you are planning a fishing vacation with your family and you want to fish down in the Fernie area, I suggest that you double check that you can actually buy a tag to the stream that you want to fish. I would also suggest that you send a little NOTE to the Premier of BC and cc the Fisheries person with your concerns. I for one do go there to Fish, however I now rarely support the hotels, grocery stores, liquor stores, gas stations etc. I have spoke with numerous business owners in Sparwood and Fernie and they knew nothing about this change a how it may affect them...

    It's crazy.

I will be fishing the Mo July Long... Would have liked to do the elk drainage circuit and hit a few rivers but no tags left on the wigwam/Michel so screw that BC! Will gladly hit the Mo for some dry fly fishing and maybe even further south to the Yellowstone, conditions and hangovers permitting... Will be welcomed with open arms, smiles, and cash registers at the Craig fly shops and bar... Even if I don't hire a guide to show me how to fish a stimmie! What a concept.

  12. No, no they are saving the river....

What does an all knowing guide cost to watch you throw a streamer at a Bull trout anyway?

I'm guessing about the same as they charge to watch you throw fluffy dries at willing-to-rise cutties... Bring cash!

Still think AB should reciprocate somehow, in a way that makes sense for our fisheries and fisheries budget.

  13.

Yeah I've been downloading quite a few books for the e-reader: Joan Wulff's, The Orvis Guide, Little Red Handbook, Matching the Hatch, Reasonable Art of Fly Fishing, and a friend got me on The Drake - which is an awesome read but nothing for instruction.

Any other books you would recommend? I got out on the Bow at Prince's Isalnd Park for about an hour this morning before work, but the section I decided to explore didn't seem particularly fishy. Got to work on my casting at least.

Barry Mitchell's Alberta Trout Highway: fishing the forestry trunk road is great. Was my bible when I started out. Good general advice on flies and rigging, and a good description of the rivers, streams from Montana all the way up to peace country.

  14. This makes me super jealous of properly managed river access (I.e. Like the Missouri in Montana)...

They have far less people, probably less license revenue, but they do a fantastic job providing launches, access, camping, facilities etc... So where are we dropping the ball?

Absolutely crazy for a premier fishery like the bow.

  15. 2 hander isn't an essential if you are tight on funds. A single hand 8wt works fine. 2 hander just makes the casting more fun and you get to learn something new

My biggest 1 hander is my 7 weight streamer rod, so I think I might be a bit undergunned... Like you suggested, I think it will be cool to learn the spey/skagit casts... I realize i might be acting like a schoolgirl, but I kind of want to lose my steel-ginity on the 2 hander.

  16. Awesome - will get in touch with Nicholas Dean and Skeena Spey and see if they've got anything open that might work.

Mikeo2 - will definitely be in touch when I book.

Knotlikely - I might take you up on that - will be in touch once I figure out what I'm doing.
