  1. Definitely practice with the rod you'll be using. A 13' wt is a good place to start but also try shorter lengths to see how they feel as well. If you're going to be doing alot of casting without the need for distance the lighter weight and shorter length can reduce fatigue a bit.

Fishtales does have skagit head kits available for dialing in the weight that feels best to you once you have a rod. As mentioned, get lessons once you have the rod to get rid of any kinks in your casting before they become habits.

"The Rockies dorsal fin is shaped like that of a stereotypical mountain - one that you can walk up and down on both sides without any cliffs. It is in the shape of an acute equilateral triangle, whereas the top of the dorsal fin of a Lake Whitefish reaches back over the base of dorsal, generally forming an obtuse isosceles triangle - a mountain with an overhanging cliff on one side."

Probably the most obvious method of differentiating between the two that I have seen. Sounds like a lake from your description.

  3. Any of the shops who sponsor the forum also give discounts on packages and will let you cast and compare them - give yourself an hour at the shop and don't be afraid to ask questions or get some guidance on casting. If you buy a 'deal' from another store without trying it you may end up wanting to replace it because it doesn't fit your style.

The Lamsons can be a good deal - the same drag is used throughout their lines with the main differences being looks and weight.

  4. Some of the ads can be put up by Google and are based on what you search for - there are ways to protect yourself (browser privacy settings, using Firefox with certain add-ons) but if you're just using IE with the default settings you've pretty much left the door wide open. Maybe searching for "fish porn" isn't such a good idea after all? :)

Of course, they do pay to place the ads.

  5. There have been some recent convictions off of pictures and video taken - RAP deals with poachers and will probably contact the right people, but you can go straight to the RCMP or a local CO if you have their number. Obviously the more information the better - video of their tracking through the river, license plate/operator photos, but also the plates of the vehicles and trailers they used to get there. Just be discrete when collecting it.

  6. Why?? If the facts are correct, it doesn't take much technical knowledge to see there is a problem.

They're still facts, but the intent of the numbers is to show a number to be able to compare Alberta to other jurisdictions. We have many more km's of pipeline than other provinces and states, so we will have more total leakage than those; of course the article failed to put Alberta into perspective with other jurisdictions because it wouldn't have helped them make a point of opposing Northern Gateway. The accusation that the ERCB or NEB are trying to hide something is baseless - all the professor did was multiply a couple of numbers together.

Yes we have aging infrastructure but at least we have a regulator and industry that can be held to a standard; if Albertans want to reduce the leaks it can be done but with the decreased risk will come a higher cost at the pump and on your gas bill. We should feel lucky in other places or times around the world it would either get ignored or blamed on other parties. The only way to assure zero leakage is to not have any oil and gas activity.

  7. I had a couple of Pfleuger's President reels for my spey rods and found that the drags were not durable. Definitely better reels out there - Lamson even has some cheaper models if you don't mind giving up on some of the aesthetics.
