  1. Anybody using these? How do you like them?

I've always been partial to amber lenses vs. smoke for all around use, just thinking about giving the MJ green lens a try,but a bit leary to spend that kind of $$ on a lens that I might not like?

I'm assuming (or giving the benefit of doubt?) that any lens by MJ is of proven high quality, and well suited to purpose(obviously fishing)......I guess I'm more interested if anybody here has a side by side comparison/review of amber vs. green in a variety of conditions?

    Hi Vagabond

I have a pair of MJ Lighthouse HT glasses you can borrow for a week or two and test em out in actual fishing conditions.

They're not bad, but I hardly use them as I wear prescription glasses, and the fitovers are more convenient.

To be fair, I think the brown copper is better in 80% of conditions as the contrast is much higher.

send me a pm if you want to borrow them

    cheers

    Sean

  2. I think you might like a product called Deeper Smart Fish Finder. I bought one and used it for fishing from the shore line and from a float tube.

It basically works with your Android or Iphone, very neat and easy to use. I didn't use extra fishing pole to throw it, I threw it by hand with just a spinning reel or lines peeled off the reel.

That looks like a great product, does it require a minimum depth?

I'd be curious to see what it picks up if you floated that down a run or attached that to a drift boat on the bow?

  3. Hey guys!

Wow, and thanks for all the responses.

If you could also share your top secret fishing spots that I could get to in my new subaru as well,

you know, just so I can test out the all wheel drive...............haha

We test drove both the Forester 2.5 and the Outback 2.5/3.6 last night,

    The wife prefers the Forester.

The Forester 2.5i with convenience package is about MSRP $33k with fees and taxes

The Eyesight tech package and the 3.6 Outback is pushing $40k, which is way out of our budget.

Coming from an '05 mazda 3, the pickup on the 2.5L engines seems a bit sluggish, but that may be me having to get used to the CVT transmission.

We did consider buying from the states or second hand, but we need the financing at at 0.9% over 3yrs, its abit more affordable then even getting

    a 15-20k vehicle secondhand.

Thanks for the tip on the Car Cost Canada report, i will definitely check that out.

We are also finding some of the dealerships difficult to deal with, and no one willing to move on price.

Will keep you posted on what we do.

Luckily we don't need the car until July/August so I might wait abit longer to see if there are any deals or incentives,

especially as they make room for the 2016 model

    thanks

  4. Hi Everyone

I'm looking to get a new Subaru, and was looking for some advice on getting a good deal.

Firstly, can anyone recommend any good site where i can find out what other people have paid for their new Foresters and Outbacks.

All the sites I end up on are from the US, so I need something with a local perspective.

Also, what buying suggestions can you offer to get the best deal with respect to

    invoice price

    hold backs

    etc.

also the intrest rates they offer are different by 1% depending on the model

anyone had any luck negotiating these to be the same

    thanks

  5. I generally head out just south of the Sue Higgins bridge off the east bank as it's close to home...maybe that's just a dead area?

For what its worth, (and I haven't really fished that area much after the flood so I don't know how much it has changed)

but I find the east bank downstream of the Sue Higgins bridge to be pretty flat and featureless until you get past the chanel/inlet and head towards the baseball diamonds.

Its never been a super productive area for me, but there were a few fish to be had.

  6. Hi all, great topic.

I moved to Calgary from Australia four years ago on what was supposed to be a ski holiday and my wife and I loved the city so much that we had to stay on.

I work in I.T consulting in Databases/Business Intelligence.

I started fly fishing 21 years ago in Melbourne Australia, at the age of 13.

My friend and I started at the same time, and we basically taught ourselves how to fly fish.

(Although his grandfather would take us out trout fishing, he remained a worm fisherman)

I've been hooked ever since then. The first thing I did when I got my license was to head off on a fishing trip.

I have fly fished Tasmania, New Zealand, Montana, Bahamas and Canada.

The pinnacle for me is sightfishing.

    Nothing better than finding that shadow hiding amongst the rocks on the bottom;

    Watching a big brown slowly sip a tiny dun, and having the patience to delay the strike;

or watching a brown tail in the shallows (only seen tailing trout in Tasmaina, not sure if it happens in any lakes here)

    cheers

  8. Hi all,

    I just built a MHX hi-mod 9' 5wt.

If anyone is considering doing the same, and wants to demo the rod before they commit, please let me know and I can arrange a test cast.

I'm in SW Calgary, send me a PM.

These are great rods, (I'm not affiliated) but as with most custom rod blanks, there just isn't anywhere that we can really demo the blanks before we commit to the build.

I'm hoping this forum becomes that place to a degree so we can help each other out with different blanks available for test casting.

As for the rod, I am really impressed with the quality of rod you can put together for about $130.

Comparable to rods in the $300 - $500 range.

Up until now, the TFO BVK was IMO the best bang for buck rod around.

The MHX is now my top contender for great value rod.

The action is fast, (akin to the Loomis GLX action), so if you like faster action rods then this will impress, and the blank is super light.

You probably won't like it if you're a fan of more moderate action rods

Great quality first rod, or economical spare rod for your drift boat.

    highly recommend.

    blank: MHX hi-mod 9' 5wt

    price: $110

Next rod build will be a Batson Rainshadow Eternity.

    Has anyone built this yet?

If you're thinking about getting into rod building, but don't be put off, its easy to get into and doesn't have to be super expensive

    cheers

  9. I don't think the those kits are particularly useful.

The cheap ones have crappy vices and with the expensive kits, you could get what you want for much less

You can usually get a "relatively" decent quality vice for around $50 - $60

Especially if you want to be tying dungeons and spinning deer hair with gelspun or 3/0 thread.

A cheap vise will let you down.

Have a look at Angler crown vise or similar.

They are solid and the hooks do not budge once locked in.

The rest you can fill in bit by bit depending on the patterns you want to tie.

  10. Has anyone here started fishing with no hook, and just the fly pattern? Thought about starting? I'm getting to the point now that when I hook a fish I just want to get it in ASAP and don't care about the fight, it's all about the perfect cast and drift and strike and tricking the fish into eating something off the surface. I am seriously thinking about making a selection of flies with the hook broke off so I don't need to hook the fish and bring them in... I think I've caught about enough fish on my usual rivers that I would enjoy it just as much getting the strike, because when I get the strike, and either the fish or I mess up and I don't hook it, I'm just as satisfied as if I had to reel it in.

Steelhead on the other hand........ different story. But for these trout...

Why stop with the hook, get rid of the rod and reel as well...........

    just joking, well kinda............

If you want a change or a challenge put on the polaroid sunglasses, put away the rod and only sight fish.

Don't make a cast until you can find and see the fish beforehand.

For me the ultimate challenge is to spot a resident brown that is feeding subsurface.

Then it's all about your eyes.

It may also explain why I don't catch that many fish.........haha

  11. I highly recommend that you watch this dvd/vid.

    The essence of fly casting

    by Mel Krieger

The bow isn't an easy river, and even with a guide who will do the whole streamcraft/entomology/fish finding for you,

it's still up to you to make the cast.

Invest in the DVD, and spend a good amount of time casting on the lawn until you can make a 40ft cast with a bit of fluff into a target the size of a hula hoop.

If you can do that consistently, any outing with a guide or seasoned local from this forum is going to be more about finding and catching fish rather than

fixing knots in leaders, lost flies, line tangles, drag free drift etc.

    hope that helps.

  12. thanks guys,

I think I found the stuff I am after.

L&L products seems to be distributed by rayrumpf now.

Just need to find somewhere that carries rumpf supplies.

It's pretty hard figuring out what the colours actually look like.

Even online its hard to find a colour swatch for most things.

    cheers
