I haven't tried this myself, but I saw a fellow seed his new lawn with a mixture of grass seed and wheat. The wheat sprouted way faster than the grass seed. The wheat roots held the soil together providing a solid base for the more fragile grass. The first winter killed the wheat leaving a nicely established grass lawn the next season. It looked good to me.
