  1. Had a great time camping out at Cataract Creek this past weekend. Took my 4 year old son fishing to try and get him hooked on flyfishing. Well I took him to a nice run and assisted Charles in casting. Well it did not take long before a eagar brookie took his dry fly, and the fight was on for him. I helped him bring in the first fish where he posed and had a big smile on his face. We let the fish go, and continued casting. Well another brookie makes a nice splash and I let Charles handle this fish by himself. He did really good, 4 brookies to hand, Smile from ear to ear on each fish and great memories that will last his life time. It was a great time to be had.

Just curious, what rod are you using with your little guys? My daughter keeps asking me to take her out but I don't have any kid friendly gear. was thinking about picking up a little 3wt or something that she can use.

  2. Got stupid today and didn't zip up the pocket that holds my flybox. Needless to say, it dissapeared down Fallen Timber when I was releasing a nice little brown. No, theres little chance of me ever getting it back. So, seeing as I've lost all the dryflys and nymphs that I've collected over the last few years I need to start over. What I would like to do is build up a streamlined collection that

will work all over the place, (Calgary, Crowsnest, Mountain and foothill streams) Here is my list, anything I should add to round it out. Figured the collective brain around here would be pretty useful

What am I missing? Anything I can leave out?

Also, I was using one of those plastic grey flyboxes with the slit foam. It wore out pretty quick and dropped flys. Any suggestions for a new flybox?

  3. A few thoughts. I spent 16 years climbing and biking in Jasper and Banff, ran into a few bears, had to change my shorts once. Pulled my bear spray once but didn't use it. As far as carrying a firearm goes, in every bear encounter I've ever had that could have gone bad, there wasn't time to unsling a shotgun, jack a round into the chamber, aim it, and hope to get an accurate shot off. Can't even imagine carrying it while fishing. Probably would have served better as a crutch in the case of a mauling. As for sharing a river or stream with a bear, let them have it. There's plenty enough holes on every river or creek to move on to something else. As to singing or shouting loudly while in bear country, why does it seem like I'm the only one doing it? I've gotten some strange looks out there when I run into other people. And I've never heard anyone else!!!

  4. I work in the bike industry and we have been competing against mail order and "grey market" product for years. We're still here. We've just had to ramp up our service to customers to keep them coming thru the door. I don't think the local dealers have too much to worry about. I can't see a brand like Simms devaluing their product. As a consumer who used to live in a small town, the ability to buy direct only increases my options. When you need gear and your only option is to buy whats available locally (which may be nothing or overpriced) or drive 5 hours and hope that you can find what you want, manufacturer direct sales are a godsend.

  5. Quick question....realized a few weeks ago that my bear spray was still in my fishing vest, still hanging in the unheated garage and now it was minus 30. Does freezing and thawing affect it's effectiveness and should it be replaced ( was new last year). Perhaps I should test it on my bride...Happy Valentines honey...

I seem to recall reading something about bear spray gelling or slushing up in the can. So apparently, the cold does affect it. Not sure if that actually affects the potency of the spray once its thawed.

  6. If they are either Simms or Patagonia their warrantee would cover delaminating. If they are another brand and are still "Goretex" [Gold label], they would still be covered... If they are not, then I guess you are S O L...

If you are not worried about breathability then just use a bunch of aquaseal...

I'm thinking pretty hard about getting Simms. Just can't afford the custom fit options at the moment which is why I'm trying to repair the ones I have. Will definately try the Aqua Seal. I was looking at some stuff for doing tent floors. I think that may do the trick. Thanks for the advice.

  7. What kind of warrantee do they have?!

    P

No warranty left on them unfortunately. And, I'm pretty sure the damage was caused by me leaving them in the ski box on top of the truck for a few days when we were down in Montana. It can get pretty warm up there. I doubt they would be covered even if they were still under the warranty period.

  8. Managed to get out on the river for a couple of days over the weekend. Fishing was good but unfortunately, i discovered that my waders have delaminated on the inside of the legs. When I turn the waders inside out, the intact membrane has separated from the nylon shell in a few places. I have been looking for a new pair of waders and will probably pick some up in the spring but I was hoping to keep these ones going for the next couple of months. Can I fix the delam and restore the waterproofing? I don't need these to breath but they need to keep the water out.

  9. There are streams around my area that I will never mention to anyone, even friends have tried to pry a few from me, and I would not guide on for sure. There are streams I would only take certain people who are closed lipped and wouldn't tell anyone else (multiple repeat customers, etc). Discretion is a good thing when it comes to these rivers. Most people probably assume I only fish certain locations down here and that's fine. All the better for me and my secret places :)

with the internet, google maps, and everything else it's only a matter of time before some of them get discovered, but it's also a lot of gas to drive somewhere you do not know and explore, just hoping to find something fishy, when you can go to spots known to hold fish. not a lot of people just take a drive to "unknown waters" anymore. There are dozens of streams within 30 minutes of my home and for the last 5 years I have spent a lot of free time exploring most of them. Some of them totally suck... except for certain times of year. Some of them suck all year. Some of them have big fish. Some don't. The best place I have found I have never heard it's name ever mentioned on this board, or heard it called "that" river, or referred to in any other way, even amongst fisherman around home here. It seems no one fishes it at all, and if they do they are all like me and not willing to talk at all. :) PERFECT!

Soooo, where abouts do you live? Care to google map that one for us <--poke--<

  10. After witnessing some of the antics out at the Homestead Public Range this summer, and knowing that some of those people will be out in the bush looking for something fill their freezer, I will be thinking twice about some of the trails that I mountain bike on and use to access water that I like to fish, with or without high vis clothing.. There's quite a few idiots out there and I do not want to become a statistic.

  11. Hate to play devil's advocate here but giving a guy a fine for doing something he probably had no clue was illegal isn't going to have too much of an impact. People hear about the fine, get pissed off one way or the other and then forget what the issue really was. Education is the key. Enforcement should be the last resort. In the past two years I have seen a grand total of 2 conservation officers out there talking to people. Theres no way people are going to clue in unless theres more boots on the ground talking to them. Same principle of community policing. Get out there, be visable, talk to people, enforce when you have too.

  12. Its where the deerfoot was extended past 22x there is a bridge that goes over the bow just after seton blvd overpass.

Oh, so that area that everyone walks down to gain access to the north side of the river by policemans? Why the hell would people cut fences there? Never ceases to amaze me the ignorance of some of the clowns out there.

  13. Everyone,

I know the farmer who owns or is the caretaker of most of the land from the new treatment plant all the way to Policeman's Flats. He has no issue with fisherman using his land for access to the river. I don't know if he has a full gate, or a fisherman access point, but whichever, he does have a place for fishermen to access the river from the extender bridge. However, people seem not to be satisfied with that, and continue to cut holes in the fence. I think recently someone even drove onto the land from the bridge (don't ask me how, I never really go there).

I can tell you guys he is starting to get more than a little fed up. He does not have to give access to his land at all, yet has chosen to do so. Please respect that, or maybe he will choose to not allow access to the land at all. Imagine having to honor the high water mark all through that area.

Sorry to sound like an idiot here but where is the extendor bridge?

  14. Is my butt always going to be sore? And I categorically refuse to buy lycra! I wore a ratty fishing t-shirt and some ancient shorts. A fashion diva I am not.

I also almost fell down the stairs at work this morning when my knees utterly buckled just after the ride in!

Already thought of that! I'd want it to get a bit warmer so I don't have to mess with waders, but plans are already hatching.......

If you don't wear some kind of biking shorts your ass will hurt. Have a look at something that has a padded liner in it. Pretty comfortable and you don't have to sport the mooseknuckle look all the time. As far as hauling stuff goes, if you're good at packing, you can stow your gear in panniers or do what I do, use a trailer. I use a BOB trailer to haul my bellyboat and waders up fireroads and out to remote streams pretty regularily.

  15. Welcome to the cycle commuter cult. It's a great way to wake up and/or unwind, is less stressful than car commuting, and is very scenic on those warm, summer evenings (think lycra).

I commute by bike everyday and started taking the long "scenic" route that goes way out of my way just for that reason!!!!

  16. Anyone know the ice status of Lower K and Wedge pond? Thinking might make a trip May long...might be wishful thinking though.

My wife and I were out to Elbow falls last sunday and everything still had ice on it, that may have changed over the last few days but I haven't heard otherwise.

  17. whats your top flies for alpine lake trout>?

depends on the time of year. Spring time, I like to use micro leechs & various beadhead nymphs. Summer time, all of the former plus mayflies of all varieties. Fall, I couldn't tell you, I'm on the river. Have a look at Brian Chan's book, probably the best breakdown on lake fishing I've ever seen.

  18. Some pretty good suggestions above. Also may help to pickup a copy of Barry Mitchell's - Alberta Fishing Guide. It'll gives you a fairly accurate breakdown on the streams local to you.

I've got the fishing guide, but some of those descriptions haven't changed since I was a kid 20 years ago so I'm a bit sceptical. Thanks though.

  19. Pay no attention to Weedy, he apparently overdosed on smartass pills or the bluebird of happiness pooped on his bald spot, either or....

Plenty of brook trout streams around, unfortunately more than there were 20 yrs ago. How far you want to drive and how soon?

Hoping not to drive too far and as for when, who knows. I have to coordinate with his parents and thier schedules. Probably later in the spring and into the summer once the water comes down. They live in Cochrane so anything within an hour from there would be great.

  20. Hi, as posted before I'm new to the Calgary area. I have a young nephew who wants to come out with me. Is there any small streams or rivers here that are pretty decent for brookies and small rainbows? I'd like to take him out to some spots where he can just hook up on something, and I don't really care how big they are, just want him to hook up and stay interested. Not looking for anything too specific just a suggestions on where to start. I'd take him out on the Bow but thats just too frustrating for me at times let alone a kid.

  21. Mine is. I was out yesterday and I had forgotten what a PITA it is.

Only a one year waranty? I thought most name brand rods had a better warnty than that.

    Andrew

It's not a super expensive rod. The first year is an unconditional warranty, after the first year then they'll replace sections of the rod for a nominal cost. I think a new tip is $25-30. Not too bad considering the combo was only $200.00. Assuming I only have to replace it once.
