  1. The guy in the red roofed house may not be sympathetic to your plight, he's had more than a few negative experiences with river users over the years. I've met him through work and he can be a bit of a gruff individual. Having said that, I've inquired about accessing the river from the north bank on his property. A resounding no to a crane, but he might maybe consider another option. Sorry that I can't be more help

  2. I'm not sure what your handles are on here, but a big thanks to a fellow from Airdrie, as well as a fellow from Kaslo. Thank you for your generous gifts of flies and boxes, they are greatly appreciated. I've kept your return addresses, and will send you guys some of my favorite ties sometime before the end of the summer.

    Thanks again for your generosity

  3. It's a really disheartening feeling to discover that someone has ripped off your equipment. I've had snowborad gear stolen before, but not fly fishing equipment. 4 boxes gone, pretty much all my chronies, streamers and dries, as well as 2/3 of my nymphs. I guess its a good thing I bought a couple of boxes at the end of the season last year, I still have some nymphs and tiny dries.

And to think I gave Pipestone a hard time for having multiple boxes.

Silver Doc, I can't imagine the feeling you had when you realized your pontoon was no longer yours.

On the bright side, I still have my rods and reels.

  4. Man I am an I-moron - I can't believe I just paid 3 bucks for that ! :$*%&:

I guess after playing with shazam I believed my phone could do anything LOL

Goodflymclovin - I'm buying a jetboat just to drive over your line !

Not a word Rob, not one EFFIN word !

  5. It is completely unethical to fish the mouth of the Highwood, at any time of year. Particularly on the east side of the river. Particularly in the morning, though it is sorta unethical in the afternoon too. I'm comprising a list of 15 other places I know of where fish congregate (like deep chop, riffles, runs, etc.) that it is unethical as well. Also, I've decided casting to a rising fish (cuz you know he's there, is eating and therefore vulnerable) is skirting the line of ethicism as well. Hell, let's just extend that to any visible fish.

All you guys after the challenge should always fish long flat sections of river with no depth changes or contrasts with no visible rises or cruising fish. Dry flies only. Have fun!! Let us heathens know how you do.

I've decided all fishing is unethical. You should all quit and give me your stuff.

You've said it. Can we make a deal on some of the extra stuff you get doubles of?

It's got more to do with how you long you play them out and how strong they need to be to break free of the kungfu revival grip.

  6. - this spring we encountered a bear about 50m away on a steep uphill trail (mud lake) and she totally freaked out and came running behind me - I can only attribute that reaction to her self recognition of her age and strength waining, she is now 12 years old - this really shocked me and to be honest I am now leaving her behind on most riverside hikes. I think, like any decision/action in the back country, one has to be brutally realistic about assessing their dogs capabilities and their own level of owner control.

I agree with most of what Pipestone has said. I have personally only seen one black bear while fishing or hiking with a dog for the last three years fishing the Castle area a lot. Mr bear came out of the forest to get a drink, and then bolted through the river, up a STEEP mossy bank and disappeared into the woods when I said hi. Dog never saw it or knew it was there. I carry bear spray and a three shot banger, but have only really had to use the banger once for a suspect sound in the woods that the dog growled at. Later on at the lake I found out that it was a pair of moose. Ever tried belly boat fishing for golden trout with 40 lbs of scared, shivering border collie sitting on your lap? Rather awkward and not very productive.

The more noise you make while hiking or on the river the better. The river is generally loud enough that I don't think the fish can hear you through all the water turbulence. I sing my Go Away Bear Song at the top of my lungs a lot. It does lead to some rather weird looks from strangers, but I'd rather a weird look from a stranger than see a bear close enough to matter.

  7. You could try Grizzly lake for brookies down by Pincher Creek. The access is by Beaver mines lake and the southcastle valley, I don't remember how far. I hiked it last year and ran into some people from the crowsnest trail riders assoc.( I think) that were doing some trail clearing with the SRD. The trail was pretty good in september except for a couple tighter aspen sections. There's a pvc pipe container with a journal in it that goes back a few years at the campsite. Lots of brookies but you might want to think about a belly boat if you can. Good luck

  8. i have to admit the 8wt is a little heavy for flogging for gophers. but i do have an Amundson 3wt midge that might do the trick...

you let me know and we can work something out

I've known Pipestone for a long time, and have experienced the gopher fishing. I can't get to a river, and the weather has been crappy for the last week, so boredom has set in. Couldn't find any gophers, so started casting to my neighbors cat, barbless of course. Really quite interesting with the catch and release, claws and fur flying, yarn bits everywhere! I'm going to come up with a fly specifically for it. I think a green/ yellow yarn fly that looks like a frog and is twitched across wet grass should do the trick. They seem to be rather finicky about taking the fly, multiple casts before a strike seems to be the norm. Good for casting practice, don't hit the cat, place the fly behind and beside it, start retrieving, and see what happens! I went with a 5 wt TFO.

Just for the record, barbless means no hook or metal, before the cat people get too mad. A small bag of catnip as the core of the frog might be interesting.

  9. Sunday - Drove 4 hours to Summit Lake (the nest), fished 3 hours, two hits, nothing set, Drove 4 hours home with a couple mildly pissed off, soaking wet buddies - Does that count as fishing LOL ?

I don't know what you're talking about. I slept almost all the way home, and had a grin the whole time! <--poke--<
