I use watchmaker cases from lee valley tools for the standard hooks (not great for streamers, but most anything else...

I haven't checked it out - the trailer was enough to dry up my appetite.
They just seem(ed) like a bunch of young kids pretending to be "trout bums". Trout bums with great paying, fish catching jobs.... and they complained about it???

Is it just me or does anyone else find it creepy that an older guy is posting about not being able to find kids "alone" nowadays..
thats actually not funny...

Maui Jim's suck. Shortly after I purchased my first pair I started to dig Jimmy Buffet and tacky Hawaiian shirts. They also caused partial blindness in my one eye; it was all downhill after that.
Pretty sure Jimmy Buffet is 10 degrees of awesome... or 92 degrees in the shade awesome (depending on the company he is keeping at the time)...

Kyle,
Love the bugger with the blue flash in it. Started adding that myself a couple of season ago and had some great results.
Nice ties.

Hey all,
I'm looking for 2 new lines and was curious about your suggestions.
1st line - 6 or 7 wt full or sink tip for the bow and small lakes
2nd line - 4 wt for small rivers and creeks. DT or WF?
Any suggestions would be appreciated
Thanks all
Not a pro - but I use the Corland 444 Classic DT in peach on my 3wt and have been very pleased with it. My 3wt is a bit on the slow/medium side.

Very talented and often quite funny writer - will poor a sip of beer next time I have a cold one.

I have never thought of cleaning my rod...

Yes a quality bobbin is a must. I use more 8/0 that any other thread. I even use it for my steelhead flies. After you get used to the breaking point it is a great size to tie with. I does not "bulk" up on the body or head, at least this is what I have found.
couldn't agree more - started with 6/0 for some of the larger stuff, but the bulk adds up pretty quickly, so I have almost completely switched to 8/0 for most of my tying...
great new season by the way, didn't catch them all as I have crazy young kids that sometimes are up way to much in the night to allow me to be up that early!
Cheers,

Great information here for beginners to "expert" (if there really is such a thing)

it depends on what you are tying for.
Do you need flies to feed yourself come summer (ie guiding)? then follow Max's advice.
Do you oly use your flies for your fishing? Then tie what you are into in that particular moment - take your time and enjoy every thread wrap (said crown royal help with the enjoyment!)
I am somewhere in between - would only tie for myself, but my "friends" (read friends as "people that show up just before the season opens with empty boxes and a dumb looking grin") always seem to enjoy my flies - so for me it boils down to drunk 'production' typing.... friends get the ones I ties towards the end of the night...

One of my all time favorite books has to be The Longest Silence by Thomas McGuane. Or 92 in the shade - probably his most critically aclaimed.

I believe it was originally a series of posts on the drake board.
There are a few books that have gotten their start through the Drake - the next on deck will be the Cracked Windshield Cronicles.

One of the beauties of fly fishing is that the hook can more often than not be removed without ever taking the fish out of the water - keep the pictures in your mind for those long winter nights....
(okay okay I am guilty of some hero shots - pretty hard to resist sometimes)

donation sent - sorry for the last minute add... don't know how I miss the thread. great cause.

I went all over the Facebook page and just couldn't find where they explain that. But I would think that if the designs are free, then it's up to the Fly Shops in Calgary (most of which frequent this site) to decide if they want to participate. I'd get a shirt and a sticker, at least.
yeah the facebook page doesn't explain it very well - I only know as I was copied on an email that discussed that they would like to see some profit going to the TU branches.
The designs are free - the fly shop just has to send an email to the facebook page organizer and they will receive all the relevent designs in a format which can be used for sticker/t-shirt creation. I think it would look great with the fly shop logo added on the shirt aswell. I would also get a sticker and shirt.
Lets see where it heads.

Interesting facebook page. Found the information on The Drake.
They have designed some pretty great illustrations for stickers/shirts etc that can be used free of charge by local fly shops. The only catch is that they request the fly shop to donate 25% of the profit from the sales to the local TU branch or other fishing charity.
Thoughts?

I got it. Not a huge fan. Maybe I over hyped it to myself.
Don't know how you could have - Ed Ward is pretty awesome for many reason's beyond the casting... Intruder flies for example.

I think a recipe for those worms is needed, Awsome ties Thanks for showing

Now comes the Bullet!
:derby racer:
Most of these are C&R waters.
I know we all take the utmost care in reviving and releasing and that they all swim away.
Studies show on average we KILL between 3 to 5%, are we then any better than someone taking 3 to 5 fish out of that same water?
Shouldn't we be more responsible and limit the amount we try to catch?
With all due respect – this is ridiculous.
Posting a request for people to discuss their fishing achievements on a fishing board and then slamming them for one of the markers in our sport…. Shouldn’t you be posting on PETA? - you might get more friends there.
I suspect that by posting here you are barking up the wrong tree with your nobility. We all know about the mortality rates of hooked fish - it is part of our sport - much better live catch and release percentage than deer hunting...
I am not ashamed to admit that I have had, if not 100+ fish days, then damned close, but your elitist dry fly single hook only rhetoric doesn’t hold much water with me.
As a side note you are getting up in the posts that people are added to this thread. Congrats on that if it was your goal.

There is no way I can support or endorse that product....

..I've noticed.. [..] ppl with real low post counts voicing their opinions..
maybe the low post count is due to more time fishing than coming up with clever internet postings...

Its only too late if your guides are freeze every cast, there are alot of people on this forum that fly fish 12 months of the year in calgary, you know the global warming thing
it is never too cold - there is even stuff you can add to your guides to delay the guide freeze up.
Good luck with the learning.

Where how?
Michaels craft store sells rolls of it. sticky on one side too. should work perfect.

I pan sometimes when I fish... usually two seperate trips.
there is okay flour gold in alberta, mostly up north.
$20 worth of alberta gold would be hard to believe out of the Bow - very very very little gold there. I suspect he was stretch the truth by about $19.99.
