  1. Anyways...based upon your last statement I suspect you and I are similarly trying to find the facts in a sea of bs. I am not making assumptions but rather being force to critically review what is commonly available as well as the logic around it and try and take out the emotion and religion from both sides. I make my judgements on common sense and fact...the noise that you and me both agree on is just noise. Probably

99% of what you and I and other have said on this forum is noise... The facts seem to be clouded in a lot of mystery and politics. I also feel money is becoming increasingly important to BOTH sides.

See this is why I responded. I've read lots of things you've posted, and your write up on the Lake Sundance problem and you seem to be a reasonable educated guy so I couldn't figure out why you posted the little facts bulletin points. Each one of those points is far too complicated to summarize that quickly and to do so is intellectually dishonest.

The thing that burns me about this is that there has been evidence to suggest that the changes to our climate have been accelerating for 20 years and it took all this media crap before anyone paid any attention. I don't think there is anyone who actually participated in one of those IPCC conferences that doesn't realize there are problems with climate models. The problem is that unless it is presented as a iron strong fact nobody will listen to what they have to say so I think they get caught up in a lot of junk. NASA has decades of data on the ice pack but it isn't real until Al gore makes a movie, noise.

I have one open question for people out there... The conspiracy theorists feel that the oil companies are backing the anti warming side. What damage would global warming cause to the oil industry if it was deemed to be totally bad and needing punative measures? I would like to think on that for a while.

Well they have funded some really obnoxious stuff on the subject. I think most of the O&G players have moved away from that strategy in the last few years but the coal companies are stilling putting those CO2 grows trees commercials out there. That doesn't make everyone who has a problem with a climate model an Exxon shill, again with the noise. It would be a mistake to destroy the energy industries but honestly is that even on the table?

I appreciated your comments and opinions to my points but I feel I seem to be looking closer to the facts and less to the media reports than you might be. Maybe not but that is how it seems.

Do you work in or were you train in post secondary science?

I read what I can follow, I don't have a science background. I took the upswing of the dot com bubble right out of high school rather than university, it was a mistake. I pay the rent with the computer and work for an aquarium company because I like it, always wanted to be a fisheries biologist but I got a programming job when I was 18 and followed the bucks. So that's the thing, you should be better at this than I am, that's why I didn't like what you wrote.

There is a reasonable middle path here and it seems to me like you are taking on the tactics (or maybe just language) of one extreme view to fight the other. Maybe I'm wrong and you think it's all garbage but I doubt it, the acceleration of the change is compelling.

  2. I would like to quit...but you have not come up with anything to change the facts...you are just sounding Suzukiized. SL...please jump in to help him on this.

    Cheers

What if I said that I think that about 90% noise surrounding climate change is just noise? That I think Suzuki is irrelevant? You are making unfounded assumptions. There are compelling things trends shown by the current state of climate science, things that we are going to have to deal with. The noise and BS bothers me just like it bothers you but I have decided to ignore the noise and consider the facts.

It's not an all or nothing situation, I can be concerned about the impact of changes in our climate without being an "eco nut". You're position is extreme not mine.

  3. Yup, remember Y2K and the hype in the media abut it??? All blown out of whack

See I think that illustrates something that people don't understand.

I worked in IT during the run up to Y2K, there were real problems that need to be addressed. The thing is, the techie types knew this and we had known about it for 10 years but we couldn't get anything done about it. It wasn't until the hype machine kicked in and everyone was running around like a moron that we got the money and support to do what we needed to do. It was a massive over reaction, there were plenty of scumbags that took advantage but the work that needed to be done got done.

Looking back I often wonder if we'd been able to deal with the problems we needed to if the hype hadn't been there. It comes back to bread and circuses, you have to scare the hell out of people to get them off their buts. I often think of this when I see things like H1N1 and climate change today.

  4. Facts:

11 years of additional increasing release of CO2 by man has cause ZERO temperature increase and in fact a DECREASE

It's unexpected and not predicted by current models. This doesn't indicate anything more than the current models are flawed, it's a complicated thing to model.

IPCC changed their terminology from GLOBAL WARMING to CLIMATE CHANGE

The is a reason for this, it was always predicted that there would be parts of the world that would get colder as a result of increased mean global temps.

GLACIER studies are localized and have not focused on all glaciers at once. Facts are some glaciers are growing, some are shrinking, some are staying the same...

It's a big project, it will take time. Some of the glaciers that have been shrinking in South Asia provide water for 2 billion people, it's important.

Arctic ice has not hit a new low this year...in fact ARCTIC ice is growing in 2009. The ice melts...the ice grows...as it has more millions of years

The thick multi-year ice that forms the northern ice cap was the smallest it has ever been in recorded history during 2007. There is a somewhat larger amount of thin first year ice building this year, that's all.

Okay I'm going to quit with the last one as I think it illustrates the point I want to make nicely. You take an issue that has been very carefully studied and a trend documented over two centuries and refute it by pointing out that the past two years has shown a very modest increase in seasonal ice accumulation. It doesn't matter what has been happening for 200 years because last year there was a 5% increase in ice mass that lasted for three months.

Really? It's like the dictionary definition of intellectually dishonest, I hope you are proud of it.

  5. Fair trade in Latte shops is just slick marketing to make the left wing eco weiners feel good when they pay $5 for a coffee, nothing more.
    .

Later on in this thread you mention Starbucks specifically so let's use that as an example. I challenge you to go to any Starbucks in the country and pay $5 for a coffee. Seriously just try, you can't spend more than $2.50. Timmy's is $1.79, it's not that big a difference. A made to order latte or something maybe but not a drip brewed coffee.

Whatever point you are trying to make dies because you are using a dishonest argument.

  6. How big of a site are we talking about here? How often are you going to update it?

For a site with say 15+ pages and fairly frequent updates it is worth looking at some thing like joomla. It's a server based content management system so you don't need any software on your machine, easy to update and manage. There are free and commercial skins you can use to give the thing the look you want.

    www.joomla.org

You'd need some place that hosts joomla sites, I'm pretty happy with www.inmotionhosting.com. Not the cheapest outfit but they do good work.

Because joomla is a fairly standard package you would be able to move it pretty easily to another host if you needed to.

  7. Can you honestly say you never had a bad day at work? I know it is not a excuse for poor service but do you know exactly why you got the service you got? Making assuptions most of the time is incorrect and it is what it is, if you do not like the service you are getting then do not go there its pretty simple.

Sure I have but I have never acted like that. I lack the words to explain how obnoxious this kid was, my girlfriend commented on it and she was only half paying attention.

Often I have found that people come onto this site to complain about one store service vs another, but really does it solve the problem?

I don't really care if they solve their problems or not. I just think it's odd that I usually hear good things about Edmonton or Lethbridge and often hear bad things about the Calgary store. I rather liked going there when it was over by Chinook.

Not tring to start fights but it does piss me off when I hear people (not saying you) that come on and group ALL BIG BOX stores as the same, and it is obviouse from this thread that it is not the case, and with you beeing in retail then would understand that a stores successes are all based on their staff and the leadership they recieve, if they have poor leadership then usally the outcome to a customer is very poor itself, but then again kids are kids but I have seen poor service not only from kids but from adults too.

I'm back and forth between Edmonton and Calgary regularly and will be returning to living in Calgary in a couple months after 2 years of the nomad thing. There is a serious problem with service in Calgary all over, probably the tighter job market. You really notice a difference if you travel often, other people have commented on this to me. I'm glad I'm not trying to hire retail staff in Calgary.

Also was it the person giving you service in his department? There are lots of things in the store I work at that I do not have the fainest clue, maybe his boss was paging him, or maybe he was the only one in his depertment and got dragged into another department, many reasons could be there, most likely since he was a kid and most kids I have delt with are more a pain in the ass then anything.

I'm not going to get upset if the kid doesn't know the answer to my question, it would be nice if he tried to find out for me but a simple "I don't know" is fine. His boss can wait if the kid is taking to a customer and if his boss isn't a moron he would have no problem with that.

If you saw the way this kid behaved you would have fired him on the spot.

  8. Personally everytime I have been in WSS here in town I leave with absoultly no problems as I come in their with absoultly no preconcived ideas as to what I should or shouldn't get from going into the store.

After beeing in retail for the past 2 decades (20 years) I have come to realize that alot of people that walk into a big box store or any type of store for that fact and expect to get something out of that store, and unforntantly a store can not please everyone the way they want to be pleased, that unforntantly is just the facts of life.

I feel much the same way grubas does about the WSS in Calgary. I'm in retail too so I understand the realities the store is facing and why they hire younger part time people for most of their positions, I have what I think are realistic expectations.

Last time I was there I wanted some glasses, I had to hunt down somebody that could open the case. The Ryders I was looking at came with 3 sets of lenses and I had a couple questions about which ones were polarized etc. The young guy I was talking to didn't have the answers, that I can forgive. What I can't forgive was the attitude he had, acting like I was wasting his oh so valuable time.

I've only been to WSS in Calgary a handful of times but left with similar feelings each time.

I like the Edmonton store though.

  9. Well I'm going to have to a agree that I don't really like the idea of an election right now but I'd also say that if Harper is looking or somebody to blame he ought to be looking right in the mirror.

Harper is a weasel. One of the things that may trigger an election soon is, IMO, a perfect reason for calling him a weasel. It may surprise a lot of people to hear this but the Home Reno Tax credit that has been advertised by the government and every building supply store in the country isn't actually law yet, it was never voted on. The actual vote is soon and Harper has decided to make it a confidence motion so if the opposition parties decide to bring him down he has a big stick he can wack them with during the campaign. He's fighting tool and claws just to maintain his position, it's not like he has some sort of platform he's trying to push through to better the country. Every move he makes is calculated to better his party's image not the country.

Five years ago I would have argued passionately that what Canada needed going forward was minority government, possibly a coalition. It's not that unusual in western democracies and a lot of countries seem to be able to function in that situation but our country can't. Our politicians, an all sides, are absolutely unable to work with each other, not that they've tried very hard.

We need to bounce the whole bunch out and elect someone that understands what the word compromise means.

  10. Just a quick set of definitions for any website arguments:

Fact=the belief of the person making an argument or presenting a position

Opinion=the belief of whoever he is arguing with.

Fact: When you mix sulphur dioxide with water it lowers the pH of the solution.

Opinion: The CBC is being mean to us.

I'm not anti oilsands, I consider it a necessary evil. What I don't care for is when the obvious problems with the development of the resource come up everyone starts ranting about how the evil liberals are trying to rot our brains and make us all gay. Put the Glen Beck "book" down, and think for yourselves.

  11. Coal fired power plants based in Sasq put out much more air born pollutants then the oil sands.... i think this is a very one sided article

Do you have any idea how much energy is used to get one barrel of the crud they pull out of those mines into a state where they can pump it to an upgrader? All of that energy comes from either natural gas or coal fired power plants in Alberta. Sulfur and Nitrogen compounds from burning fossil fuels cause acid rain and the prevailing winds are west to east, not north south. There is no other side to this story.

The article presents facts not opinion.

  12. I bought the Linksys G wireless router

Is it easy to set up? Easier to get the security going?

Yeah it's pretty simple. Plug the router into your modem (WAN port) , plug your PC into one of the numbered ports and fire up the CD. It helps you setup a default security that will work just select WPA2 Personal as the encryption type, it's the most secure and the Wii supports it.

Feel free to shoot me a PM if you need help.

  13. My kids are begging to have the Wii hooked up to the internet. I hear some people use a wireless router...but it can be annoying to set up and have problems etc.

I also hear some people just put a hardwired internet connection to the Wii.

The wireless connector on the Wii works really well. I would suggest you get a Linksys router like this one:

    http://www.memoryexpress.com/Products/PID-...32%28ME%29.aspx

It has a startup CD that does a good job of setting things up for you. If you have cable internet it's pretty much just plug in and go, with DSL there are additional registration steps to go through with your provider.

What is better? Also what issues around viruses etc? I hear some bad viruses now target gaming consoles.

Provided you get decent signal strength from wherever you put the router wireless is certainly easier. Encryption lag and these sort of things hasn't been an issue for me, I think Nintendo has done an excellent job of designing their communications for wireless connections.

As far as the viruses go there hasn't been a confirmed case of a virus on a console yet. I wouldn't say that it's impossible but it would be very, very difficult to do.

  14. I have to take issue with one of the points they bring up in the review. I don't much care for Olympus holding onto the XD standard either but seeing as though they provide an adapter for micro SD free with the camera why is this an issue? Seems like nit picking to me.

I have an Olympus Stylus 850SW that I have used for work the last year or so. I work at an Aquarium store so it is in and out of water, mostly SW, every day and it has never skipped a beat. It also goes fishing with me. Most of the other guys I work with have similar gear and one thing I notice is for the macro / super macro shots the Olympus gets consistently better shots than the Pentax W60. They didn't really look at that too closely for the review and I think the macro mode would be used a fair bit for those stream side showing off your catch pics.

I did consider upgrading to the new Olympus 8000 this year but I didn't really see anything there that made it worth while, I think if I had to replace my cam right now I'd look at a 550WP. I really never expected to get a year out of a cam I use every day so I'm inclined to stay with Olympus.
