  1. To my knowledge "fly only" regs have never been introduced as an etiquette solution.

Yeah, I don't think they have ever been either... I think back in Newfoundland, the stricter regs have actually contributed to more poaching sadly enough. When I fished salmon 20 years ago, barbed hooks didn't matter but now these are the current regs - Alberta is still gentle:

An artificial fly must be used for salmon and trout angling on scheduled salmon waters throughout Newfoundland and Labrador. Only one hook may be used at a time. Regulations describe an artificial fly as a single barbless hook dressed with materials to attract fish. It is not baited, does not have a weight attached to sink it, and does not have a spinner or similar device attached. A barbed hook may be made barbless by cutting or filing off the barb or by pinching the barb flat so that it is in complete contact with the shaft of the hook.
  2. I fully understand where you are coming from but I honestly do want to find a solution for their problem and I much rather have them leave happy then mad, adding fuel to the fire just isn't me, Im a professional at what I do and what people to feel like they are not getting ripped off or sold the wrong thing.

Can't give you the key to success, but trying to please everyone is generally a key to failure.

We have turned into an entitled society, everything should be easy and quick for people. I'm not in retail anymore but I still face alot of clients in the run of a week.

  3. I also find if your nice to everyone and wave and see how their day is going, things just simply go better.

Well said... and if they don't wave back, frig em...

I go fishing to relax, and when i'm out flicking a fly, nothing gets me down.

Catching a fish is a bonus, not the do all and end all.

If someone doesn't talk to me, no big deal.

Fishing is supposed to be fun folks, laugh it off and enjoy your day.

  4. Personally haven't had any issues with people drifting the river, guess i've been lucky, they keep their distance and a quick chat as they are going by.

It's the shore fishermen that have me scratching my head, try to be friendly and they look at me like I have 10 heads.

  5. Hahaha.. Yes it was an experience I will never forget. I did have my belt done up, which I think saved me a little bit. Still was absolutely soaked. I didnt just take a nice little dip, it was a full speed face plant in about 4 feet of water. :) And yes that was one of the many thoughts running through my head on the way back to my rod, "coulda used a big foam fly..idiot" Haha, live and learn :) I only wish someone was there to howl in laughter at me to bring my rage level down at the time.

Tell you what, lets go out one evening this week and give a repeat performance. i'll be sure to bring the video camera, get some youtube going for everyone ;O)

Glad you had a good day of fishing tho!

  6. Well as fate would have it , I am off to Saskatchewan for a job that should last until Christmas ! Yeehaw on the year-to-date . Boooo on having to leave this beloved trout stream , and work in Pike infested water's . Nothing against pike , well not too much , as I much prefer salmonids .Yeah I can't go anywhere without packing my gear along with me , so I'm sure i will get hooked up with some "fresh water barracuda". And have been researching streams and lakes around the Battleford's for trout waters . Looks like i will be facing the decision of taking the drive home to get my fix on the Bow every weekend or searching for brown and tiger trout waters.. Has anyone any info they may be willing to share on some areas for Sask trout !? I'm hoping to arm myself with as much info as possible before i head there ! if not , about the pike , ......do we need a steel leader or just go heavy on the leader , or woven etc. TYA... CJ

Oh, I can see you getting hooked on chuck and duck pretty quick. Nothing like a big pike on a flyrod, just remember to grip your rod tight cause they will make off with it lol. They tend to make short strong bursts of speed.

Big ugly flies is the ticket, surface flies (I use mice and frog patterns) in the wee hours of the morning. Thin steel leaders work well or a strong tippet -their teeth will chop off weak mono. Gets the heart pumping when you see the swirl before the pike hits.

Oh and there are trout lakes in the gap. Give me a shout before you go

  7. When I looked earlier today it was $550 - now it's $680. wow

And how can something be classified as "new" when it came off a dead bird?

For the less learned like me, what did something like this go for before the "hair hackle" thing?

  8. I've been finding that fish are hitting more 10 to 20 feet out the last couple of times i've been out.

It's odd, when the river was high and dirty I was running my indicator at 9 feet thinking the water was really deep - and losing flies like crazy. I'm realizing now that the water is clear that these same areas are only 2 to 3 feet at best LOL.

  9. Dropped into springbrook today to get my rod tip replaced - partly a big mistake, Ssomeone like me in a place like that.

The BVK was brought up in conversation and I was brought in a back room. The gentleman tells me to close my eyes, hands me a rod and asks me to tell him what weight it is. I'm thinking 5 wt - no it's a 9 weight with the new BVK reel attached.

This is a really light combo, i'm going back one day to demo it out in the back yard. Didn't have time today due to work.

  10. I guess i'm asking how to stay out of logs, but it's not really possible...

All my tippet is new, i'm using improved clinch knots, always wet the line before I tie it down. I'm using 10 pound test and knots are good, when i'm really snagged into something heavy, it takes alot of force to break everything. Sometimes the bottom fly goes, sometimes it'll break at the clinch of the top fly, and i've had my surgeons knot snap.

I'm soon going to try some of the braided line from my spincast, wonder how that would cast? The hooks would break before the line would.

  11. Use 10lb test and keep your stone as the top fly with less expensive flies at the bottom.

Generally losing the bottom fly - tried what you suggested, now i'm losing both. Just some of those FML moments lol...

Oh well, have to expect some collateral damage when fishing - i've only lost one to a tree this year.

  12. It is definitley the water conditions. I am losing flies, too. Bumping stones along the bottom, you are bound to lose some on the rocks and logs. I don't like the fact that it takes me about 1/2 an hour to tie a realistic looking stone fly, and about 5 seconds to lose it. Try taking a long stick with a fork at the end, and slide it down the line to where the fly is snagged on the obstruction. It did not work for me the other day, but it often does.

Nymphing will soon be ending for me anyhow, time for dries and subsurface!!! Can't wait to start doing some real casting again :o)

  13. Yeah, sucks that i broke the rod but ill be back online by tomorrow evening. Nearly bought a new one tonite but im going to start buying gear for camping this week.

Been using 10 pound test tippett, takes more to break it off then 10 pounds. Wish someone would come up with a hook system, sort of like weedless - but for flies

  14. Soon going to fork over my paycheck to fishtales in flies alone... Been losing stones like crazy, great quality ties but at 3 bucks a pop this is adding up in a bloody hurry.

Tie into bottom grass, usually can pull out but with a log? My knots are strong, takes alot to break the tippett off.

Any tips on keeping more flies?

Broke my TFO rod tip last night too, off to springbrook in the morning...

  15. First double I think I've participated in this year !! YeeeHaw ! Good job Rob!! ( sorry for the finger in the upper right hand corner)

It was pretty sweet when we both had fish on at the same time. Won't get much fishing in this week, but i'm free most of the weekend.

I deal with alot of people day to day - due to my job - and they are always amazed when I tell them of the fishing right here in the city... Have to show them pictures as proof cause they don't believe me...

  16. great deals guys.... the flies you stock are top notch and I shall pop by to grab some of those stones before there all gone! :)

Yeppers, great quality stones. Don't be a hawg and save some for me eh? <--poke--<

I'll be down later today to replenish my flybox.
