  1. nokian vatiiva are another one to look at - available only at Kal Tire and not cheap but i've used them for a few years now

as a consumer reports subscriber i can tell you pirelli scorpion atr were the top rated at tires followed by yokohama geolander a/t-s and bridgestone dueller a/t revo. nokians weren't included in the testing.

i am expecting tires will run between $900 - $1100

almost as much as a new rod

  2. just got back from the back country (and yes i slow down on gravel roads for other cars), seems i ran over a sharp rock and gave my tire a nice 1 inch gash. Luckily i found a tire shop in Pincher Creek - the guy was supposed to close at 6 but was doing paper work when i got there with my flat.

anyway he recommended i get Light Truck Tires at least 6 ply or higher if i do those roads regularly.

Not being much of a tire expert, i was wondering if anyone had recommendations as to is it really needed or are a replacement 'P' rated tire ok

do the tires on gravel roads make that much difference?

    thanks

  3. New Zealand has always represented the best to me... the best sheep and wool (more velcro gloves than in all of Scotland), the cleanest water, the nicest people, and of course, the BEST trout rivers (after Alberta).

Right now, one of those trout rivers is being threatened by a dam. Those of you who fished the Oldman before the dam was put in place will understand how this will ruin the river and destroy the wild trout population. On top of that, its just not the same to fish below a big concrete wall.

As an angler I appreciate wild spaces and natural flowing rivers. I have always dreamed of travelling to New Zealand to fish the wild productive rivers. I have no desire to fish a tamed river below or above a dam, and I’m sure many of the tourist/anglers that travel there (or dream to) feel the same as I.

I enjoy catching wild fish that I know have struggled within their environment to attain the condition they are in… and from what I’ve seen of the Nevis, the fish are excellent (see below)!

Info on the issue can be found here: http://www.savethenevis.co.nz/

Sign the petition here, to show international support for wild fish, that one day, I may have a chance to pursue.

Take 2 minutes and sign... because one day when you win the lotto and offer to bring me to NZ, I'll want to fish this river!!

signed - I will be in NZ in 2 years for my birthday and part of my present to myself will be fishing for about 3 days - will need to take this river in, any other suggestions?

  5. The latest I've read on this subject is........ wash your booties or your feet.. in Vodka.... ya no kidding.... neat-o..... I've not tried it, but what the hell!!!!

sounds like a waste of vodka to me - but I did see that on Myth busters and it proved to be about the best way to get smell out and they confirmed it to be true

  6. I've not been on the Crow for about 3 weeks. However, by now the fish are super fly shy and key onto small stuff. If you use an aquarium net to skim the film, you will find all sorts of TINY pieces of midge and BWO crud with no discernible whole insect bodies. But they seem to see stuff we can't. It can be frustrating. Obviously they are eating something and it's always small..there are no end of #26 through #32 midge on the Crow. It is common to see midges flying that are 2 mm long. Evil stuff for fly anglers.

When you see a bunch of fish in a confined area it SEEMS that they may all be eating different species of bugs AND/OR different stages of bugs. AND it seems to be aggravated as they seem to cycle through insects species or stages. So it is pretty damn difficult to find something a that works consistently for any period of time. So you tie in 17 different flies and then get a hit and think you have found the key and it works for one fish and then does not work.

There are a few things to try (NOTE: I am not saying they will work.)

    1) Go to small dries. #22 and #24 midges for example.

    2) Go under the film...#22 BWO nymphs/emergers or midge pupae fished just under the surface.

    3) Use 7X tippet. It is no time any more for 5X.

    4) Tie on a small #18 black ant.

    5) Tie on a #10 foam black beetle--as has been suggested. Go big..up to 20 mm long.

    6) Go have soup at the Lundbreck Cafe. ;)

They have seen 40 gazillion Stimies by now and so that's unlikely to work.

    Good luck.

    Clive

Great advice especially the going for lunch part.

i was at a fly shop the day after trying for some help and he told me some of the same things you mentioned - especailly the small fly part.

I laughed when he showed me some of the flies he recommended 'cause I would spend most of the day trying to get the line through the eye - you would think there must be an easier way to tie small flies onto your line

especially as the numbers of fly fisher folk age and our eyesight gets a tad poorer - where are the genuises that find a solution to things like this?

how about selling pretied flies for some of us?

  7. Was that you on the Crow on Wednesday at the Lease?

I had a similar time on wednesday. The were rising in a few spots but I couldnt tie on anyting that was consistantly hooking fish. In the end It was a probabyl sz 16 foam beetle pattern that got me most of the fish. I think I got one on a sz 18 BWO as well.

yup that was me down there - i found a lfy that worked for one fish but none other.

changed up several times befoer i found anohter fly for one fish

pretty much how the day went - it was interesting to see all the fish and crazy that there were a bunch hanging around my feet and totally ignoring me, even when i Moved they stayed with me.

they were most likly having a good laugh at my expense

  8. anyone ever buy flies on line? I have seen a couple of sights where you can buy flies an the price looks preety good as opposed to buying retail.

those who have (I dont tie flies though I may have to at the rate I lose them) what srot of experience have you had?

Is the quality good, are the suppliers reliable?

any recommmneded sites to buy flies from?

If you buy larger volumes (say a few on line forum members Hook up to share an order) would anyone be interested?

    thanks

  9. Flies and hooks are sold throughout North America. Laws differ from place to place. Barb production is the way most machinery is geared. If you support a local tier you will get barbless, just ask.

ok but we are in a capitalist economy - we can vote with our dollars is it not possible to exert some $$$ muscle by asking more and more for Barbless?

just food for thought - cause my wife asked me the question and it got me thinking - why not

i must be in a different age group cause i dont recongise any of those

surpised you even know what a CD player is arent you like 12 - a GOD of a fisherman - but what do you know about music?

  11. They do sell em that way, but it is up to the tier to use em, so check out stores with locally tied flies; With customers in different places with different rules, the bigger companies or tiers who ship flies everywhere just go with the barbed hooks and let the angler sort it out.

so do you know which retailers sell the barbless hooks - i think we should support the effort. i also dont see a whole lot of extra cost in not having a barb - hell after a few thousand hooks it is probably cheaper in (what ever metal they use)

so who sell local made hooks?

  12. according to the older timers there used to be a pretty good fishery in the Nose Creek waters.

this spring my wife found a 9 inch trout on the bank near Beddington walkway where we sometimes stroll. so there are still fish there, though i have never seen one in the water.

is Trout unlimited ever considered restocking this water way to try and reestablish the fish populations?

not really considering fishing it - but it would be nice to walk by this creek and see fish in it as it does seem to have plenty of holding water through out the year and no reason that i know of why it couldnt hold a trout population

    any ideas?

  13. i was down south last few days on the crow and in one spot i was in teh middle of several dozen rainbows that through oput the afternoon were eating (slurping) on something.

I tried nearly everything I had for dry flies and got a few really nice fish. But i suspect it was more luck than the fish targeting what i was offering.

i had flies go over top of numerous fish and they ignored the flies (most of the time) I even had 7 swiming around my feet - but they were not talking to me.

I tried midges and other flies so small I had a bugger of a time getting the line threw the eye.

I caught some hoppers - threw them onto the water - watched them drift over half a dozen fish and nothing. A moth fell on the water struggled, driffted over a buc of fish and not one evne rose to look at it.

so what should I be tossing out besides a giant net or a stick of dynamite?

    any ideas?

on another note - isthe Livingstone still worth fishingthis time of year?

    thanks

  14. I got an email today from my friend at Bow Valley Wildsmart. She said that the bears are moving down to the lower parts of the valley & along the river & creek sides to feed on Dogwood berries. It will be harder for them to hear you coming over the sound of the water so there is a greater chance of a surprise meeting.

I co-wrote an article for the newspaper last year on bear safety while fishing. If anyone's interested, or needs a reminder on avoiding encounters, I'll track it down & email or post it.

what timing I met my Grizzly buddy that I see every year on the Castle just yesterday.

Just as I found a nice run too he crossed the river about 200 yards in front of me. so ended my day on the Castle - figured he was ther first so i let him keep the run

  15. Here is a question that i need help understanding

I have fished the N Ram for a nubmer of years - usually mid to late July and always caught 20 - 30 + nice sized Cutts every time. Always on dry flies

I as out there today and the water was lower and slower than I had seen before, my friend managed only to land 2 and had a couple of more sniffs at his nymph.

i had 1 hit and 5 sniffs at my fly all day.

in the flows and pools and other usual spots you expoect to see fish we saw none - other than what we stirred up with the flies and a grand total of 4 others we saw move in the water.

I am wondering that if the water levels get low and temps warmer - would this combination cause the fish to start to migrate? and if so where would fish (such as on the N Ram) they go?

I noticed something similar to this on another larger creek a couple of years ago - similar idea

alwasy caought lots of fish and the one time the water was fairly low and slower and very few fish to be found.

if someone or a fwe of you can shed some light on what happens in this type of case with fish behaviour that would be appreciated
