  1. For dries, you're bang on, 5x will do for a 16 though.. (again fish related)

for nymphs, i use 8lb vanish and that's it, if it fits through the eye, i'll use it..

awsome. it is nice to see i am realatively on the sme page as you guys. so now just gotta work on that approach. man am i bad at that. always so wound up to get on the water i scareem all away on the small streams. but orkin on it.

  2. yup liek brent siad.. someitmes if u get a few on that fly it could be a size or color issue or maybe jsut thick tippet..... stealth is key aswell for anytrout

ok hen that is pretty much as i am doing. my next question then would be what size tippet do you guys us for say a size 10 hook and what size tippet for a 16 or 20. am i on the right track with about a 4x for the 10 and 6x for the later two?

  3. Cutthroat or browns?

good question. well lets go with either or i am guessing for browns you wait a little longer at each pool until you find the sweet spot andcuttie you move on andfigure you will get one in the next pool

  4. i have a question regaring the smaller streams and rivers where there is an obviouse start and end to each pool and the is some walking distnce in between. if you were to set out for a planned all day trip where you would like to start near the truck and end way out in the boonies which is usually the case. do you guys switch flies at each pool if they are not responding to what you are going for, or do you do your passes on each pool with one or maybey 2 flies then move on. or do you sit at each pool and work it unil you get something. i am interested to see how everyone attacks this scenario.

  5. Hi guys

I'll be moving to Calgary soon and I have never fly fished although I am really interested.

I will be looking into buying a rod and reel soon.

But as mentioned I know sweet-blue bugger all about fly fishing.

I'll be fishing for trout in and around the calgary area.

What rod and reel would you suggest a biginner buys and what other equipment is esential?

Any other help will be appreciated.

    Thanks

i would suggest just grabbing one of those road reel combos with the line already set on it for a newbie. they are ususally affordable and work decent. if you are planning on fishing calgary and area definatly i would suggest a set of waders. they vary in price, from obsene to afordable. that would get you out there and what i would do is, most outfitters offer a smll flybox with assorted flies for the area. if you do not go that way i would really suggest heading to a fly shop and talking with them on set up, flies, teqnique etc. if you would like a littel more info feel free to pm me.

  6. u got it... ever wonder why u see a ton of em in the gap around august and septemebr but are hard pressed too find a ton on opening day....... its all a migration on any river.....

right on. just checkin with what the pros had to say so i know what and when to go for em. thanks maxwell.

  7. just curious. went down to oldman on the weekend and got skunked. started at hwy 22 and one other guy and i got chatting because everyone else got skunked, he was saying that the bulls were probably still in the lakes. my question since i do not regularly fish these waters is that do the bulls actually migrate back from 22 to the lake or s this a myth.

  8. i am by no means a pro at streamer fishing. As a result i have actually kind of scared myself away from it for the most part beause of my technique and lack of catching fish. I never really know if i am deep enough. i am trying various methods such as a sink tip and floating line with some weight. what would you guys suggest for the bow this time of year. full sink, sink tip or full float?

  9. i am a plumber. first off, you will actually not use that much energy using the second tank. what happens is the first tank will heat the water up then it will be transferred to the second tank as you use water. so the second tank only gets hot water. it uses very minimal energy and almost un, noticable on the bill. the second thing is the new hot water tanks are so wel insulated, if you tried to waste your time insulating it i would be amazed to see even a 2 dollar saving per month. as for instantanious hot water heaters, i think they are crap. chances are you will have to resize your gas line to put it in. about 95 percent of the time that is the case. they are also garbage because the heat a low volume of water, this is done by blowing a flame over a 1/4 inch coil. so all that you have to supply your house with hot water is 1/4 inch. the nxt problem is the costof them at about 3500 usually. the other problem is that since it is 1/4 inch with calgarys really hard water they tend to scale up. i have seen some scale up completely within 2 to 3 years. they also take a bit of time for the water to heat up so you will find yourself running them for a little bit longer than normal to get the hot water. so in the end are you actually saving money or spending it. if you are looking to get a new tank put in which is good idea if it is 10 years old send me a pm and i could maybe help out

  10. I few trips come to mind 1 is from the end of highway 66 Little elbow to blue rock wich is a 4 day trip through some beautiful country. As well the fording river pass west from etherington is another incredible trip. Your best bet is go to Mountain Equipment Coop they have excellent maps and suggestions for trips. Also ask people on here about the fortress lake hike It looks awesome.

thanks for the help. I have been inquiring a little about the fortress trip, however from what I have been hearing the bridge over the athabasca got blown out a year or two ago and has not been rebuilt since. if anyone has any insight on that matter i ould be delighted to hear about it. as for the two trips you mentioned i am definatly going to give those some thought.

  11. the northover ridge trip from aster to three aisle was actually my first idea. however from a few reviws i have read, they have all said it was a two to three day trip max. we are looking for about 8 hours of hiking a day for the full four days and my sister was not too keen on that trip because it was such a great deal of alpine. she is really looking for the scenic foresty and waterfall kind of trip.

  12. I am planning on going on a backcountry trip this summer around mid july. I have my sister coming out from ontario and I wanted to show her a great time. I was thinking of heading into k country we were looking for about 4 to 5 days out there. As of right now i am thinking of starting towards elbow lake and hopefully finishing around evan thomas. the one concern I have is camping. Are you allowed to bivouac out here or what are the rules. does anyone know what this trail is like. my sister was looking for a lot of foresty stuff not as much alpine. if anyone has any suggestions for this or another trip to do over 4 days that would be terrific. I was thinking of about 10 km per day or thereabouts depending on difficulty of course. We were also looking for a fairly moderate to difficut trek. any help would be greatly apprciated.
