Get your best patterns tied up and send them in to the address listed below before January 10, 2014 to participate! We are encouraging entries from all four corners of the globe - so spread the word. Entries will be displayed at the 2014 Western Canadian Fly Fishing Exposition - January 24-26, 2014. Aside from bragging rights, the lucky winners will receive subscriptions, prize packs and have their winning patterns published in Fly Fusion Magazine! Check out all the details here: http://www.flyfishingevents.com/fly-tying-competition.html CATEGORIES FOR PARTICIPATION: DRY FLY: Traditional hackled pattern or an imitation of a fully hatched insect. Also dry flies like attractors, and imitations of land-living insects (Terrestrials) or floating, insect-looking bugs. Hook:single hook. NYMPH: A fly is a nymph until it has left its nymphal skin. Water Beetles, Water Spiders, Freshwater Prawns, and other insect-looking under water bugs living in freshwater belongs in this category. Hook: single hook. WET FLY: Traditional or new wetflies with quill, hackle or synthetic wings. Salmon flies are not accepted in this category. Hook: single hook. STREAMER: A streamer is a fly that imitates a fish. Streamers are often tied on a long-shanked hooks or an ordinary wetfly hook with a long wing. The wing or other part of a streamer is usually tied of hair, feathers, zonker-strips or different kinds of synthetics. REALISTIC: In this category imitating level will be the most important criterion YOUTH: Any pattern category can be submitted by tiers age 16 or under. Please refer to individual category descriptions for specific tying expectations. DETAILS OF PARTICIPATION Each tier can choose to compete in any or all of the categories with one fly submission per category. Registration package should be completed for each fly submitted and should include: • Registration form (download at right) • Three samples of pattern • Name of the fly (Known or new) • Name of the insect or animal that is being imitated (with image if possible) • Recipe for pattern including size and type of hook used • Special tying instructions • Submission password Registration packages should be mailed to: Fly Fusion 100, 2250-162 Avenue SW PO Box 24030 Calgary, Alberta T2Y 0J9 Deadline: Registration packages complete with patterns must be received by January 10th, 2014. Jury will consider the following equally in judging the entries: • Proportions of the fly • Consistency and technical aspect of the tying • Suitability of the chosen materials • General impression • Innovativeness • In the realistic category - imitating level will be the most important criterion! Entries will be judged in three sessions: 1. Prior to Western Canadian Fly Fishing Exposition - Jury will narrow each category to the top three patterns in each category 2. Saturday, January 25, 2014 - Jury will announce first, second and third place winners in each category. 3. January 24-26, 2014: All patterns will be on display at the Western Canadian Fly Fishing Exposition. Attendees will vote throughout weekend and overall crowd favourite will be selected once votes have been tallied. Prizes: First place: Winners in each category will receive a two-year subscription to Fly Fusion Magazine, a Fly Fusion prize pack and will have their patterns featured in an upcoming issue of Fly Fusion Magazine. Second and third place: Winners in each category will receive a one year subscription to Fly Fusion Magazine and will be provided with a certificate showing their category and place finished. Crowd Favourite: Winner will be featured on flyfusionmag.com and the Fly Fusion Facebook page. Winner in this category will receive a one year subscription to Fly Fusion Magazine. chrisbird Posted January 9, 2014 Author Share Posted January 9, 2014 Ok Fly Fish Calgary, we've had a great response to this competition from all over the world but we would love to see a few more entries from our own backyard. We know there are a ton of amazing tiers around these parts so consider entering. The winners will be announced at the Western Canadian Fly Expo at the end of the month in Calgary. In theory, the deadline is tomorrow, but we would invite you to get your entries in and will accept entries up until January 20th. Looking forward to seeing what you've got!
