ANY hybrid species is expensive to produce and stock. Alberta should establish a properly funded lake stocking program with both "quality" and "trophy" management of selected waters, long before the stocking of any exotic species is even considered.

Non-resident and alien licensing should be increased and the funding should be directed to stocking programs. How about "Guide Licensing" ? How about a "Stocking Surcharge" on resident licensing? All directed exclusively to stocking management?

Alberta already stocks brookies.

I believe the expense is worth it if you started off making the unique fishery a quality fishery say 1 over 22 inch until you can establish what the over all interest is to anglers fishing that particular unique fishery.

Alberta is in many respects in the stone ages of fisheries management. BC has stepped outside the box and has a great system going. People marvel at the quality of the fishing in SASK and MAN. Gezz...even Klein came back from fishing in Manitoba and thought the only thing he needed to do in Alberta was institute a barbess hook regulation. BAM...problem solved. Problem is...short sighted management on his part...in other words...he thought the fishing was better outside the province and put all the problem firmly on the shoulders of barbed hooks.

I am somewhat stunned that some fellow fishermen seem cloistered in their thinking as to how to improve fishing. I can't seem to get past the fact that as a lobby group we fail miserably due to apathy and lack of unified direction. Often making improvements to a system starts with making subtle changes to get the ball rolling.
