  1. It's a little more complicated that that. Brookies are a fabulous fish. Many would say the BEST of all the trout.

No they should not have been planted in our waters that had Native fish. One of many mistakes made in the past.

Of note.. all Brookies planted are triploids.

As for our natives waters now ..yes the Brookies should be removed..The problem is we can't just have a general.. kill all brookies regulation ..because many people can't tell the differance between a Brook Trout and a Bull Trout.

If we had a special license to kill Brookies in flowing waters , a special ID test would be required ..That could be an effective management tool I would support.

I am not keen on dumping poisions in creeks...

There is actually a special license that allows you to do this on Quirk Creek and various other bodies of water, you must however pass a test as you mentioned above which is available at Trout Unlimited in Calgary and record details about your catches. Im not 100% sure on all the details but there is such a system in place.

  2. Yep, and just a FYI that is a Brookie and not a shark ;)

Just a quick note about my guiding experience up at Fortress for anyone who is interested. The facilities and food are amazing, a diamond in the rough in the middle of absolute no where. Quite a spectacular feeling being the only boat at times on such a large lake with such amazing fish, quite a rarity in todays worlds. In regards to the fishing, it is second to none. Having hosted clients who have fished at other trophy brook trout lodges, the consistency, quality, and all around experience it offers to guests far exceeds those offered by any other lodge. It may not have the history of the east coast lodges in NFL, Northern Ontario, Labrador, or Quebec but the scenery more then makes up for it. Mark my words, that I know there are likely some world records swimming around in that lake and that one day it will be broken. This fish was my best go at it, all thou im sure i fell short by 5-6pounds, 14-15pounds is a big fish lol. Only wishing i had a scale as i might qualified for a IGFA line weight record :). Anyways thats all i will say about Fortress, Id like to post more pictures but im having issues in regards to that.

  3. Always looking at the negatives. Ive seen many shows that show great handling of fish and proper techniques, why not point these shows out? why is it that everyone on this board must point fingers and look at negatives. For once id like to see, did you see so and so's picture or movie! what great release technique ect... *hit happens sometimes, im sure weve all dropped a fish on the rocks by accident at one point, or even dropped it in shallow water without a proper release... screw it, we should all just quit fishing all together, at the end of the day you are sticking a sharp object in the mouth, or in the throat of an animal, taking it out of its natural environment in order to save/attempt to save its life, and then releasing it back into the wild. As a result of this things will happen, and everyone will do it differently. Get over it

  4. Green would be a horrible choice for D, sure he has high points but look who is on forwards? i dont think we need any help getting points, plus green has shown time and time again he will go for the chance at a point rather then make good defensive decision. Id much rather have a stronger Defensive player anyday then a point getter, that being said i am an Oiler fan and was surprised Bouwmeester wasnt selected.... I dont think the team is great, but it could have been far worse. Im sure they will do fine, Canada has alot riding on this and it would be a pretty big joke on the world scale if the fail to preform in hockey...

    Lets hope

  5. something to read...will it come out west?

been in the news for years and years, as much as i can remember there is a high electric current stoping them from getting into the great lakes and thus canada so lets hope that stays working. Beyond that i also think there are some ponds in Alberta that actually have them but the are there to keep them clean and are 100% infertile. Could be wrong thou

  6. Correct me if i am wrong, is it not TU's responsibility to conserve, protect, and rehabilitate our streams and fresh water ecosystems? not destroy an area so you can have easy access to a river? be glad that you are even permitted to take in and put in at the location. Wait TU is a non profit, but according to Dej1 they should spend all of their funds to pave this area and make it a nice easy spot for him to put in. Sorry if this is your 2nd post and im coming off as rude but grow up man. Not a way to enter a community

  7. I didn't take as being even slightly negative, i really appreciate your feedback and input. You have been a great help through the whole process. I just glad nobody told me my net was too small! haha

You know what they say about fishermen with small nets ;) baahahhahaa

    or is it....

    nevermind

  8. I have no sympathy for the guy fishing a closed section, but hey, he was carrying the regs, and said sorry. Give me a break! Some people make up lies like that, you know. You can't figure out the regs? Don't fish there then!

The problem lies in these people's sense of entitlement. Just because they made the instructions difficult for your little brain to puzzle out, doesn't give you any rights. :derby racer:

    Rick

FYI Rick, some people dont know how to read. Take me for example, i have no clue how to read and as a result i rely on other people to tell me what is in the regs. So in this case is it their fault that i dont know what sections are closed? what if i really want to fish, but my friend who will remain nameless who can read isnt home, so i decide to go anyways? am i a bad person for this? food for thought man! food for thought

  9. Yeah ive done a couple papers on the Bulls, they used to be able to catch them as far as Lethbridge back in the early 1900's, then *hit went down hill in a hurry with the introduced species and how people got mad that the bulls were aggressive and basically tossed thousands on the bank to rot and die. We surely are paying for it now. Just like we keep killing beavers and such because they ruin our brown trout streams... well beavers were here long before the browns... go figure

  10. BS..... i didnt read all the posts but the first ones i did and you guys were asking what speed these people must be going? and it must be crazy high. Well i got 2 tickets this year, first was 100 at the bottom of a hill in K-Country, thats 10 over the limit AT THE BOTTOM OF A HILL...... that pissed me off, but not nearly as bad as the one i got within calgary in Rocky Ridge going to my friends house. I got a $65 ticket for going, wait for it.... wait for it.... 55 in a 50 zone....... god damn female cop, i almost strangled her. End of the line thou, i WAS Speeding, guess im just unlucky thou.

  11. Neil:

Just a quick economics lesson; its not about xxx% mark-up, which, in triple digits, can seen as outrageous, gouging etc.

Its about profit margin. As in, why don't you let Russells factor in their overhead, expenses, staffing, lease, etc etc.

Shouldn't go there unless you are prepared to calculate all the accounting, rather than a distorted picture.

    Now you'll lecture me on not addressing your question. Here's my reply;

Nike was cited once as being a corporate 'evil doer' in terms of using 3rd world labor. Behind the scenes though, is how people's income relate to the cost of living for their own country. 24 cents would seem outrageous to us, but how much is she making per week? Is she above or below the national income? Does it allow her to feed her family and live better than her peers?

Folks in China that worked for Nike were found to have slightly above average living standards and enabled them to afford "luxuries" (bikes for transportation, as an example) that other families weren't.

So what's the deal with the eco-weenie obsession? You tell me. All I know that people can whine and complain while wallowing in their hypocrisy (pretending to be advocates of the poor oppressed people in the 3rd world while reaping the benefits of low cost consumerism).

Bottom line for me? If the workers are treated fairly and paid a decent wage compared to the country's standard of living, I have no problem with corporations that use cheap labor. Keeps costs low, and frankly I'm keeping it real here folks. Companies are always going to be attracted and migrate to areas where cheap labor - which account for the majority of expenses - exists.

Fair trade as it relates to laws, and regulations, and the WTO are a larger issue of course, in that sense, one could say 3rd world countries have been exploited for decades because of the lack of a level playing field, subsidies paid by the rich countries, tariffs etc.

  12. I can personally say that it was a pleasure to work for TUC and under Mr. Cressman. He was a great man, even thou i only met him a couple times due to him being in the hospital i could see the passion and drive he had for TU. It is a great loss for the TU family and many others. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family.

  13. I love smith's however 3 or so years ago i bought a pair of the polorized ones and noticed after a month that the colour of the glasses on the arms was bubbling off. So i sent them in to get repaired which cost me around $50 or so to get them to quebec i think, got them back like 2 weeks later? only problem was that they were a different colour and i was the new owner of leopord print sunglasses haha, i kept them and have them and use them to this day and they are awesome however i am having the same problem with the bubbling and cracking but dont care as much now as they have scratches and a couple chips on the lenses so its almost time for a new pair. Dont know how many times ive dropped them glasses down a side of a mountain

  14. Not a fishing related story but kind of along the same lines as the thread goes. Back in my 17-18 less then admirable days we were pre partying before the big festivities of 17th ave when the flames were playing Tampa in the finals and as we were leaving my friends apartment I notice this backpack kind of semi hiding in the bush’s so I was like sweet! So I went and started to see what was in it, only things of mention were a sweet hat, a belt, an awesome bottle of cologne, and a nice pair of shades but there was no ID or anything. So I go up to my group of friends and am like “Dudes check out this sick belt I just found!!!!!” and my buddy Chris was like Sickkkkk!!!!!! Man I have one just like that!, then I was like and Check out these sick sunglasses!!!!!!!!!!! Chris: Dude that’s soo cool I got a pair just like that!!!, then the cologne, then the hat till he finally looks over to where his backpack was hiding to see all his clothing out all over the place. Made for a good laugh, anyways now a days I would look for ID, and if I didn’t find any I woulda just left the bag and wouldn’t have thought of taking anything. But fishing wise, I hooked the ½ decomposed skull of a dog on the South Raven once….smelt bad and was disgusting trying to get my hook un stuck, but nothing of value yet.

  15. Will you please go to this address http://www.rivernetwork.org/forms/vote-5000 and vote for the Stillaguamish-Snohomish Fisheries Enhancement Task Force? They are the 5th group in the list. You’ll need to select the button next to their name and enter your name and email address at the bottom of the page, you don’t need to enter anything else. This organization is a very small salmon habitat enhancement group that a colleague of mine at Trout Unlimited Canada use to partner with and they are trying to win a $5,000 donation from Busch Beer. Right now they are ahead of everyone else by 7 votes. $5,000 is a lot of $$ for them. The money will go to their Education program.

This is purely a ‘whoever gets the most votes wins’ contest, but you can only vote once.

    Thanks guy

    Dustin

  16. I know trout unlimited canada, and alberta sustainable resources just did a HUGE dinner in support of a new childrens catch and release pond going in at the sam livingston hatchery. Was called the Kids Can Katch, might be worth it to see if some of the local guides could donate some time teaching some kids from big brothers/sisters a day of fly fishing on the pond. At the very least youd get great media coverage id imagine
