  1. youtube has some great tutorials.....look at Davie McPhail, he does a great job of explaining but does tie some tough flies....

Pheasant tails pretty good to start and no matter how theycome out they will eventually catch fish........good Luck and be ready for the addiction !!!!!!

  2. Back to NY now.....Didnt bring laptop so I just got these replies now....all I have to say about the Bow and the rest of the rivers we fished is I WILL DEFINITELY BE BACK !!!!

They are awesome rivers and you guys are fortunate to have them so close !

The Bow is a tough river to fish being so big and a lot faster then anything we see here in the east.

We had Maxwell Robinson guide us 3 days and he did a great job !!!! He really knows the rivers and put us on good fish every day.

Cant wait to go back again.

Thanks for all the suggestions and info you guys gave me and hopefully see you next time.

i lost a box of flies the last day on the bow and will be posting about that on another thread.....glad it was the last day not the first !!!!! LOL

anyone have any other suggestions for mid to late July....I dont mind buying flies when we get there but really like catching fish on ones I tied

Botangles Mufffin BT and Redbeard .....i think the Cutty Hut is calling so we are going to have to see it !!!!!

  5. Porto

Glad you did well on the setups.....my 14 year old now fishes with me all the time.....I started him with a $40 rod and my old reel and line.....When he got out of the stage of thinking he was Indiana Jones with his whip after 20 minutes of no fish , I gave him one of my older "good" rods.....My$.02 is be VERY patient.....in the beginning I would just let him do whatever he wanted while I fished.....then when I thought he was ready we went with one rod....it was "his" time....for quite a while he couldnt get a fish so i would hook them and give him the rod to reel them in.......once he caught the 1st one on his own , a nice 15" rainbow, which here in NY is a good fish, it was all business after that.

he still loses interest if there is no action but if they are after his fly and he misses he is that much more on point.....

best of luck and enjoy it !!!!!!

  6. We are coming to Calgary in July. One from NY, One from Ireland and one from Edmonton (transplanted from Ireland....lol)

We will be there the 3rd week of July and have a guide booked for 3 of our 6 days there.

Cant wait to get there. We have fished the Beaverkill, Willowemoc, East Branch,West Branch and Main stem of the Delaware in NY as well as many rivers people in Canada would never have heard of. Along with that we have fished the Suir Rver and many others in Ireland. The Suir is rated as one of the 3 best trout rivers in all of Europe........Well now we want to see the Bow and all the rivers in Alberta..We know a week is nowhere near enough time to see them all but this is just trip #1...WE HOPE....

We are booked with Maxwell Robinson as a guide. I have had a few Email conversations with him and he seems to be honest and reliable. As I tie my own flies, he has given me a list of flies he suggests, I would really appreciate any other suggestions for a few local favorites from the forum here. You guys( and girls ) fish these rivers all the time, and know there is nothing like catching fish on flies you tie yourself.......

I would also appreciate any suggestions on fly shops in the area, as I hear there are many and from my experience all are good. Most fly fishermen are all good !!!!!!

We would always look to meet up with a few "locals" exchange ideas, fishtales, and even a few beers.....maybe even fish with you on one of our unguided days,,...I hear Canada has Beer ?

We are looking forward to Alberta !!!!

    Jim K.

PS....If anyone is headed this way(to NY),,,,please contact me and I hope to help you on this end !!
