  1. also a company like GM does not cease to exist it if goes into bankruptcy. Court ordered bankruptcy protection just gives a company time to reorganize. Hard to believe? Air Canada, American, United, and Northwest Airlines have all been bankrupt @ one time or another and there's still 10s of thousands of people earnin' good wages in those companies.

    Let the f***ers fold

What about the thousands of big and small companies they owe for design work or parts ect.

  2. These 2 statements say it all for me seem the only solution that our government can come up with is to close every thing or make it into a park rather than enforcing the rule and regulation that are already in place

If anyone thinks charging a few bucks to go camping on crown land is going to solve the problem they should camp at a Provincial Recreation campground. Was at one this weekend here are some of the things I saw, ATV running around the campground, target practice with pellet guns in the campground, public property destroyed, people fishing with 2 and in one case 3 rods from boats and shore, litter all over the place my wife picked up 2 garbage bags of litter along the trails in the park. Did I see any enforcement of the rules no, Conservation Officers and RCMP drive into the area stay on the main road go to the lake, turn around and leave not one did I see a CO or RCMP get out of a vehicle. The Campground operators only seem interested in making money, only time you see them is to collect fees and sell wood.

Let’s see some enforcement of the rules that are in place not more rules that get ignored

  3. Hi, Stillwater Nymphs do they need to be one color? Such as that moss green?

    Thank-you.

Phil Rowley in his book Fly Patterns for Stillwaters has a fly called the Stillwater Nymph tied mainly of marabou. I have tied it in a number of colours and have even mixed colours on the same fly.

  4. Hey folks,

I joined this board to see if I can make some fishing contacts in Calgary.

I am moving on April 5 to take a job in the city and would like to get involved with

a club or two. Any suggestions? Meeting times?

I have been fly fishing for 20+ years, tying for 20 and average 120 angling outings

every year at home. And I'm still married.

Thanks for any suggestions you can give me.

    Regards,

Hi Steve welcome to Calgary, check out the Hook and Hackle at www.hookandhackleclub.org/. We meet twice a month for fly tying and have some fishout during the summer. Real friendly bunch of guys and gals.

  5. I pull a 28.5 5th with 92 3/4 Dodge Cummins average 14 miles per Cdn gal. In a real strong head wind between Medicine Hat and Calgary I was down to 12MPG I haul my trailer about 7000 km a year flat land a mountains never had a problem. I like the extra power I get from the diesel especially in an emergency. Safety is important to me if I don’t have enough staff to handle the business in the shop no one is going to die if I don’t have the power to handle an emergency someone might. My brother bought a 32 ft motor home last year with a V10 after his first summer of driving it he said that this next one will have a diesel, main reason is when climbing hills his engine is screaming and he only doing 50k/hr Fuel economy is less than ½ I get on my old Cummins.

  6. Don. What do you think about the Common Cents System?

Executive summary: Use a bag of pennies to meaure how much it bends and where.

Sounds like once you know what type of rod you like, you can use this system to find a similar rod regardless of the manufacturer. Do you think a person could use this system to learn which type of rod loaded with a certain weight line would work for them?

Hydropsyche have you ever tried this method. I read the articles after reading your post and then measured the intrinsic power and the action angle of my three rods. My new rod is fast action #7 according to the measurements I got.

I then weighed the first 30 ft of my 4 lines and did I get a surprise.

 Floating line that I thought was a #6 turned out to weighed 220 grains making it a #8 line

 Fast sink line that I thought was a #7 turned out to weighed 200grains making it a #8 line

 Sink Tip line that I thought was a #6 line weighed 180 grains making it a #7 line

     Slow sink that I thought was a # 6 line weighted 90 grains making it a # 3 line

I then went out to the park down the street and cast the first three lines with the new rod. I could cast the floating line the best; even being out of shape I could cast it 50 ft with out much trouble. The fast sink was harder to cast that distance and the sink tip I got out about 40 ft.

So it looks like I need a line that weighs about 220 grains for the first 30 ft.

My next step was to go to the Internet and look for specs for different brands of fly lines and found that most do not give the weight of their lines only Rio gave weights. Their Outbound WF 6 F/SI weighs 240 grains for the first 37.5 ft

Next step will be to find a shop that has this line spooled on a reel a give it a try.

  7. Yes it is a full rotary vise. I bought my vise on ebay at about 1/2 of what they wanted at the cheapest store in Calgary.:D There are also other fly tying sites that sell them and just about anything you need for fly tying. If you do some shopping around you can find some great prices. For example I bought 12, 200 yard spools of Danville 6/0 Flymaster waxed thread in various colours for $1 spool. :)
