  1. I just dont understand this i have had numerous boats float through water i am fishing and it puts things down for 5 min MAX these fish see boats ALLLLLLL day long it is part of their habitat........I think the BIG foul is 1. when they dont stop fishing or 2.They pull over into water you are obviously working up to......but to just float by close or far not a problem! if you are complaining about that then you need to relax a bit and fish somewhere else because this is not the river of ten years ago and it will only get more traffic. I think people should learn to adapt a little because the fish certainly have.

I am very well aware that a boat going over a fish or down a bank will only shut down the fish for a small amount of time, but rowing your boat out a couple strokes won't hurt your day of fishing also.

Why I made my original comments was common courtesy , which is pretty uncommon no days. when I was taught to row a drift boat, the lessons were not only how to row the boat but also how to conduct myself on the river, river etiquette was as important as learning how to row. IMO giving another boat or bank fisherman some room as I float by is just the decent thing to do. "do unto others"

Your comments are just another example of the apathy of todays youth and the demise of our society. It seems no one cares about others only themselves. So your telling me that you would float right by another boat so you lose no water to fish, rather than thinking of others you only care about yourself. it only takes a couple strokes of the oars to move the boat out and drift down a hundred yards or so. But instead of doing the decent kind thing, you keep being greedy and fish all the water you want, I will be old school and show you the proper river etiquette and I will pull my boat off shore, give you some room and go on with my day, I might even give you a wave and say hi, just because that's how I was raised.

Just because there are more boats on the river why should people have to adapt from doing the right thing?? We all fish because we enjoy it, while you are out there why not try make someone else's day good by giving them some common courtesy and showing nice river etiquette, but I guess you would rather just hog all the river for yourself and the hell with every one else, NICE.

  2. x3.

nothing will change if nothing's ever said.

had a number of similar experiences myself.

sometimes, tough call. get the greenies who park unknowingly in a hot spot for lunch. and then there's ones who will do that on purpose.

see lots of cut-offs, low-holing, lane hogging bad manners, poor etiquette, rude, agressive & pushy behaviour.

from guides, from locals, from tourists.

sucks when it's a guide...they are supposed to be the pro's, right?

we were fishing a skinny side channel last week, and a drift boat came around the corner... with no where to go but down.

kudos to the oarsman, he did what he could to do a clean & quiet drift through, apologized [but really no one had any choice in what was going to happen], and the angler didn't cast into the pool until they were well downstream.

much appreciated...well done sir, whoever you are.

that's the way it's supposed to go.

a little courtesy, goodwill and common decency goes a long way.

    have a nice day.

was this on Saturday in the side channel below the bleachers, river left channel across from must be nice, if so that was my boat. we did our best not to disturb your water. Hope you had a good day.

  3. I have to wonder if proper drift boat etiquette is a thing of the past.

I used to guide on the bow, I don't get on the river much anymore. I did a float from police to mac on Saturday. The actions of a guide boat we saw just wouldn't have cut it in my day. we were parked on the bank just downstream of policemans on river left, changing flies. We see a blue aluminium Hyde (at the boat launch someone called him mike) fishing drys to the bank, as he gets closer he does not change his line what so ever, as his clients are almost ready to cast onto our boat he asks if it's OK if he fishes the bank downstream of us. I was kind of in shock that this bonehead was ignorant enough to run his boat like this, I replied "I guess its all right,,,, it's not like we were going to fish that bank anyways" so this dork fishes right on down the bank.

We were changing from nymphs to a hopper type rig, we just left the nymph rig and went on with our day, we did not let this guide ruin our day, it is just one bank after all. But I was sad to see the actions of this guide, I don't know who he was working for, but if I did I would be calling the outfitter.

Later on in the day he floated by us going down the middle of the river talking on his cell phone, so it appears that he not only has no river etiquette, but not much of work a ethic also, when I guided I spent my day working for the clients not talking on the phone.

I hope what we saw was just one guides disrespect of others, not the way most guides are drifting. All the other boats we saw that day were doing the right thing IMO, even the canoes and rafts gave us more room than this guy.

  4. IMO proper driftboat etiquette is to at the very least move away from the bank upsteam of you and not to move back in to the bank untill downstream of you, have your clients cast to mid river untill we are past the bank fisherman. If your fishing gear I would always move out farther as you can cast farther than a flyrod will. This is not law but any of the guides I worked with did this, those who don't are not much of a guide IMO. Your clients will see thru this crap, they will respect you and learn to respect other fisherman if you take the time to explain that giving the bank anglers room to fish is the right thing to do, after all you may have up to 15km or more to fish that day, a 100 yards won't kill you. The clients will always see this is the right thing to do.

It's pretty easy to be a guide on the Bow, just buy a boat and make a website, this don't mean you are a real guide, you just take clients money and haul them down the river, have a look at a guides website, if all the photos are of the guide and his friends he aint a real guide, if the album is full of client pics then he is most likley the real deal. Don't let a few a-holes represent all the real guides that work hard to give their clients the best day possible while respecting other anglers on the river no matter is they are bank anglers or other drift/jet boat anglers. It's a big river, pretty sure we can all share it with a little class and respect.

I guess if some coconut runs over your run, sit back smell the roses and give the water a rest for 5-10 minutes and the fish will be ready to eat your flys or len thompson 5 of diamonds.

    tight lines.

  5. I'll bet the First Nations members think the same thing about you and your favourite singer... <--poke--<

not sure if you are aware of this but the indians have their own special regs, they can fish anywhere, anytime they want to.

  6. I think the real problem is not people posting where their favorite fishing hole is that's adding to the fishing pressure, the real problem is the massive population boom in alberta, there is just simply way more people fishing, and that makes every fishing spot in alberta have more pressure. to quote my favorite singer Dave Stamey

"Someone needs to go back home

Cause the west ain't goin' to hold us all

The western green got covered up

    They built a shoppin' mall

Someone needs to go back home

There must be towns back east

    Where there ain't nobody left

Someplace they might go back to

If they ain't pooped in their nest

Out here there's only traffic jams

    People every where

    A bunch of rolin' hemorrhoids

    Fowling up the air"

maybe there should be some new fishing regs, true local born and raised albertans get to fish 4 or 5 days a week and all the johnny come lately's get to fish a 2 days a week. If you were not born here maybe you don't get the same rights to alberta's resource's as those who were born here. Just my 2 cents, obviously I am not serious about the regs but I sure feel that way sometimes.

  7. I have been sent this email in regards to the High River TU chapter, which has not been active the past few years. There was some good interest and quite a few active members. But the problem with many non profit organizations they now need some one to step up the the plate and take a leadership roll or the chapter will close. If you are interested PM me and I will get you in touch with the proper people, I have removed his name and contact info so he does not recieve spam.

"Important notice regarding the future of the High River TUC Chapter

After a good start and a couple of fundraising dinners the HR TUC chapter has been inactive for the past several years (I seem to be good at starting up but not so good at maintaining momentum).

In order for High River to remain a viable Trout Unlimited Canada chapter new leadership is required. Without new leadership there will be no option but to fold the HR chapter. I am requesting that anyone interested in taking on the leadership role of the chapter to please contact me.

A deadline of Saturday Oct. 13/07 has been set for persons to contact me expressing their interest in leading the chapter. Without a new leader coming forward by this date, the chapter will fold and all current bank funds will be dispersed to various TUC chapters and TUC endorsed/supported programs.

I encourage you to consider taking on this leadership role.

If you would like to lead and re-energize the High River Chapter contact me by e-mail at:

The future of the High River chapter is in your hands.

    Best Regards,"
