  1. Great pics! Great lakes! How's the rock snot in the "vince"? Haven't been there for a few years. There was hardly any didymo way back when they stocked Goldens; but from '05 to '11 it grew a lot. It looks like you went higher up the ridge than you needed to; were you checking out the vision quest rock circles?

  2. Good points Pete, Probably just my biased against the feds who pull the strings in the Kremlin, the vid was just so shiny it kind of struck me as an ad.

Now lets talk fishing: After several years without predation the invertebrate population should be booming in Rainbow lk and those "100" should grow fast. I plan on going late this season. Heads up to anyone heading up there; the hiking trail to rainbow lk has been deactivated so you'll have to use Warner's horse trail (unsigned and sloppy when rainy)

Thinning the trout population in Sawback lk will allow those remaining to grow fast, 20 years ago it was common to catch more than one 24" cutt in a visit,

The last time I was at Sawback I was skunked though, that's why they call it fishin and not catchin

  3. Here's my take on it: the upper bow TU folks seem like a good bunch, I would become a member if I was a joiner.

Kevin Van Tighem is a good head, but I will always be partial to someone I first met on the Upper Spray River.

His latest book seems to have a strong conservation message to it, much like what I hear from the members of this forum:

Get ATV's and clear-cuts out of the front ranges.

The movie: I could watch hi-def video of the Upper Cascade all day; Sawback creek, Flints park, Block lakes and the west fork up to Badger pass are some of my favourite places on the planet. Three times I've been to Rainbow lake and it is stunningly beautiful; twice a bear showed up before I caught 2 fish and I had to leave in a hurry

But! I thought the movie was no more than a commercial to attract more visitors (and anglers) to the park, there was very little conservation message (as someone commented in the discussion). So why did the money to make the vid come from a communication budget. I think the primary goal of the current Banff park administration is to attract more visitors and as a 20yr bow valley local I don't like the direction the current Banff park administration is taking,

  4. Since the great trans-alta sucker rescue of 2013 there are a few big lakers between Banff and Canmore. Apparently they were running low on heli-time so they took the last few loads to the river instead of back to the reservoir. Try smelts (lol) in the flats up from where the cascade power plant outflow dumps into the river.

  5. What annoys me is when random campers move in for the whole summer, Look at the setup just up from the westcastle ski resort.

I was talking to some locals down there (the Castle) and apparently a new park is being created that will prohibit random camping.

The park won't affect the ski resort or any of Shells operations, and it will prohibit random tent camping; so it's not perfect.

All I know about it is hearsay though, maybe someone knows more about this park.

  6. There is a beauty little hike-in lake I try to get to every few years.

After leaving the official trail I have to bushwack for awhile before hooking up with

a faint game trail to reach the lake. So this year I see someone else has found the lake

and they have left a line of flagging (which I took down btw). When I reach the lake

there is almost no sign of fish, which is unusual as the fishing is usually fast and furious

for small cutts. So I'm thinking "who fished out my honey hole lake ?".

    Then the culprit shows herself:

    P1010696.jpg

I'm blown away, this headwater lake is at 6500 ft. elevation. I've seen plenty of otters

in the B.C. interior, but never up this high.

  7. Way to go for getting there, I puked out on the cliff face when I tried this one.

The suspence is killing me: We know hiketofish made it down, but:

did the young guy in sneakers freeze up on the way down? (I've been with a guy when he froze up on a cliff...no fun let me tell you!)

are there still fish up there, if so are they splake or have they evolved into all sorts of brookie/laker hybreds?

    stay tuned.

  8. Hi XJ

depends what you're doing up there. Are you:

    1) outside all day working/walking? Go with Dunlop puroforts and Bama liners.

    2) outside all day standing/sitting ? Good old Sorel pipeliners or military issue bunny boots.

    3) in and out of the truck/shack all day? Good sorels with extra socks and liners.

    4) sitting in the truck/shack all day like a white hat, band-aid or safety cop? Slippers.

No matter what you're doing never wear cotton socks. Heavy wool, merino wool or polypro socks, depending on temp, is what works for me.

  9. Spotted these twins a little ways up the Smith-Dorrian road. Seems that mom is keeping her family around the Mt. Engadine lodge at night and then moving them up into the old cut-blocks below Rummel lk. in the day. Maybe a good shutterbug could head up there and take a quality pic.

Lets see if I can figure out how to post pics.

    Alrighty, that wasn't so tough.

here's a few from one of my favourite spots:

  11. This topic is too funny, since I'm a newbie here I figure it's best if I keep my opinion to myself. One piece of advice if you do decide to fly. When you're chatting with the pilot on the headset don't use the word chopper, helicopter pilots hate that word and it will make you look like a newbie. Better to use "the bird" or "the machine". Many seasons of Heli-portable seismic and planting taught me this.

  12. Hi Uber,

When I did the Rockwall the two highlights for me were Floe Lk. and the Rockwall pass itself. The alpenglow on the wall above Floe lake the first morning was superb. The weather turned crappy on our last day so the long haul out Helmet and Ochre cks. left more of an impression on me than the falls. Maybe go in to Floe Lk. for the first night, second night at Tumbling Ck campsite, check out Wolverine plateau and Rockwall pass before packing up camp and hiking out Tumbling ck. on last day. If you've got your heart set on seeing the falls you should be able to make it out on Numa ck. It's been awhile since I did this one so if any of the cgs or trails have been closed I didn't know.

  13. No fishist here. 512PA has caught the most fish in our little group. Definitely just envy :)

Glad to hear, how could you not love whitefish; when they're smoked properly, they are delicious! :canuck:

  14. Yes indeed, those upper Bow browns are very sophisticated fish. Every 10 or so refusals I manage to hook one and I've noticed that they are in excellent condition this spring, probably due to the mild winter? Here's a pic of one already light coloured and with a bit of a belly in early Apr..
