  1. Let's start off with your casting upstream in a big pool.

You decide to use a caddis as you can see a couple floating around in the light breeze. You start casting, and casting, no risers in sight.

All of a sudden you hear a big splash behind you. You turn around and there is ripples 10ft downstream. You move downstream of the ripples and wait. 20 seconds later you see a snout rise and you lay your caddis 5ft upstream. One second later all hell breaks loose.

A big splash, and the line starts ripping through your fingers. You try to get a hook set but can't because the beast is already peeling line out. The beast heads straight out for the middle of the water. You watch your reel as you get closer and closer to the backing. Using your palm, you slow the beasts run to a halt and try to gain some ground back. You manage a few feet back before another run. This run is short and downstream. The fish now lies close to the bank, in a fast current. You decide to run down the bank, in near blackness to gain ground. You manage to gain almost all your line back before the beast takes off again.

After a few more minutes of running down the bank, and the beast running, you finally get a glimpse at it. All you see is a bigggg flash of white and the beast takes another run to the middle. Still unsure as to which species it is, you try desperately to land it.

You finally get the beast tired and as it gets closer to you, your rod tip flies up, and line goes slack.

The beast popped off. Now you are angry, real angry. You mutter a few choice words and sit down a ponder what went wrong. The fly is still on your line and the hook is straight. After a few minutes you still don't know what went wrong and just continue to fish.

That was my story tonight. The one that got away. I'm still mad about it since it looked 23"+

It peeled line and fought so much harder than my PB rainbow at 20.5"

Oh well I'll catch him tomorrow.

Ya know i had this happen to me this spring on a big brown on a dry, and when I seen the hook was strait it gave me alot better feeling as if the knot had broken. If a fish straightens your hook, just plain and simple he tested your gear to the point of failure. He won this time. But thats what keeps us coming back. To try and get a picture with that beast.

Congrats you are now officially addicted to this sport. Ahahah ahhaha

  2. I have a regal vise that I am wanting to sell! It is a couple. Years old but still holds every hook I put in it from, size 20 dries to 1/0 streamers. It comes with a base, and c clamp.

I'll let it go for 100 Obo, a new one retailers for around 400.

    Pm me if interested.

  3. Depending on how much and how long you stay at the spots it can easily be a 10 to 12 hour day! But you can make it in 7 and half 8 with minimum number of stops! I've never done the float with no stops so I can't tell you exactly how long it would be that way but I'm sure someone on this board can!

  4. Hi all,

Was great to cast some of those sticks, now it's gunna be even harder to make. Decision on which one to buy! But I hope to see you all soon, maybe a Spey float trip with a couple drift boats next time! Just give me a date and time and I'll bring my boat!!

    Thanks a lot boys!!

  5. Hi all,

Just curious to as knowing how many people on this board used or would use a fly shop in the nw of the city? I live in the nw and I dread driving down 30 minutes on a good day just to grab that one material that you need in the middle of that killer fly you are creating. I think to myslef sure would be nice to drive half the time or less to get it. Just curious to know how many would use a fly shop in the n.w.?

    Thanks

    Matt

  6. thinking about getting a spey rod for the bow. I have never spey cast before and i am wondering if it is practical to use on from a drift boat?

spey rods can be very productive from a boat, especially with streamers because you can cast to the banks without being to close, and not spook those big easily spooked browns, that lay on the banks! qiuck casting when nyphing to!!

  7. I'm in the market for a new pair as well. Do studs on boots damage the floor of a drift boat? Specifically for Simms.

if you are even thinking about getting into someones drift boat with a pair of studs, DONT! if you own your own boat and are not affraid of damaging it then go ahead, but there is nothing that pisses me off more than people scratching my boat, with studs!!! I have one big chip in my floor( which has the black simms grippy bottom) and everytime i wash it i see it and it is slowly getting bigger! all because someone was to lasy to take out their studs!!! :$*%&:

  8. I wore felt before and have rubber now. Slid like a sonofabitch in both on greasy rocks. Neither of them were all that great in that situation. Rock snot is rock snot.

However, my rubber boots are MUCH better for hiking and will wear better long term than felt will. I also will second the notion that rubber is much better in the winter as the snow doesn't pile up the bottom of the boot.

I'll likely add some studs next year for better traction on the rock snot, but rubber wins for me.

i started with felt boots, then recetly upgraded my waders and boots, i have simms g3 guides , and the freestone rubber sole boot! so far i love the rubber way better because when im fishign mountain stream without rocksnot i feel like im glued to the bottom, and really i agree with FNG that rock cnot is rock snot and alagae is alagae no matter what material you put on the S**T you will slid around like your drunk. And the Rubber wears way better than felt!!! Just my two cents though

  9. Yes Adam, it was nice to met you to!

Glad you were able to hook into a fish! Of the 2 flies I gave you, which one worked the pmd or caddis?!

Any time you want to get out again, drop me a PM I'll show you some better water! Also there are quite a few guys on here that also live in Cochrane, as well!

    Cheers,

    Peter

  10. air flo ridge = great for nymphing + casting streamer, I found it's kind of too heavy to cast dry. I have this line mainly for nymphing.

rio gold = great for dry fly. it sux a big time for nymphing + casting streamer. I would only recommend if you just wanna cast dry. I have this line this time of year for the only purpose: dry.

btw, rio gold will crack (mine cracked). make sure you keep the original package and receipt for exchange. the quality is not acceptable for a $75 line.

hi, im a little confused, which one of the airflo ridge , there are numerous??

  11. i have had a pair of g3 non convertibles for a couple of months now, i have fished about 12 floats and not one problem, i have hiked and fell on rock in sothern alberta and still dry as a bone, when makeing that many waders, small faults lke that happen, im sure if you told simms about the problem they would replace the waders or fix them , no quesions asked,

  12. Hey Guys,

To quote Harps "We need regulation and enforcement!! No random camping and regulated trail use!" This is exactly what this province needs. I own an Atv that I use responsibly and I used to belong to an atv club that promoted responsible atv use, bridge repairs and installation, family outing's etc, etc. I felt it was helping but given the large number of atv users that don't give a crap and never join a club, it was kind of pointless. It seemed that for each person in the club, there were 19 who weren't and didn't care. The club that I am refering to is the Crowsnest Quad Squad, here's a link if anyone is interested in what they are doing..Quad Squad, they also branched off into the Calgary Quad Squad which is doing similar projects just farther north around the Calgary area.

I think Atv'ers are there own worst enemy at times, this previous winter, bridges that were installed by the Quad Squad and 4wd groups, were damaged for no apparent reason. One was chain sawed in half and the other was disassembled and thrown in the trees. Both of these acts took time, but what I don't get is why? I guess this goes back to the pointless part, why build the bridge, when alot of guys just go around it to go through the creek. I guess I am feeling a little tired of trying to educate the masses(atver's anyway) about the impact they are having, when nobody seems to listen. The Quad Squad is doing good work and will be putting in more bridges this year and hopefully educating more and more atver's.

I guess my point in all of this is, that some guys who have/use atv's want more enforcement, more rules, consequences for abuse and designated trails just as much as everyone here does. I just don't know if it will happen from the Alberta Government.

all this batter back and forth about random camping and quading is driving me crazy!! I have to admit, i am a suspect, i camp and quad and fish and hunt in the crowsnest area, i would just like to know, how many of you people who are with banning camping and quading have ever camped over night , to go fish?? or ever camped in general, if you have you are a suspect aswell, when we camp we use firepits that have been there for years , and when we quad, because i fish the river and love them i do my best to not corss them!! The small amount of damage that the quads do to the trail is minimal compared to the hundreds of logging roads built, and i would like to know how random "camping" only, not quading or anything else just camping efects the fishing in the rivers??? The poeple who camp in the dutch creek area are very responsible rider and campers that keep thier composure and do not go rampid and ruine the enviorment!! Since ive been camping in the Dutch creek area i can go out a 10 at night and not hear a wuad or anything, just maybe a couple of laughs around the fire!!! I camp there because i live in calgary, and cant afford to drive to crows ever day, unlike some poeple who live close!!!! This area is still an amzing fishery, and i know campers and quaders that the more you try and stop the camping and quading the more they do, the area is still keeping its composure and the camping and quading, is doing minimal damage to the stream systems or the land, i have personal expieirience!! Maybe just a suggestion, if the "quad squad" built bridges or banned river crossings with quads all river damage , ( which is minimal) would be stopped!!

  13. i just recently bought a pair of simms g3 guides, because i usually fish about 100 to 150 days a year. I have aken them out in march when it was -5 and i had a pair of sweat pants underneath and didnt really ntoice the water. if your going to go "top end" for waders simms is what you need!! .

I own three rods at the moment, a tfo 6 wt, a sage vt2 custom 6wt and a sage flight 4wt. my first rod was a gift , but even though it didnt cost a thousand dollars for some reason it is the rod i catch most of my fish on!! the reasoning for me owning sage rods, is there incredable warranty, no qustions asked they will send it in and replace what ever you need, may it be a tip or what. Without a dought take a look at some sage rods they cast great and youll never have to retire them!!

The majority of my fishing is the bow in the earlier months and the oldman, crows, tributaries and those rivers in the summer. My 4 wt persorms flawlessly fishign for those cutts, i can throw nymph rigs, and dries with no trouble. But in the end it is all what feels good to you.
