  3. Brad the crescent lift is more of an advanced technique and involves the of the rotation of the wrist. The incorporation of wrist rotation will be addressed in a later post in the series. I believe you will see this advanced technique(wrist rotation) in chapter 9 or 10. BTW I believe Deneki will produce the entire series as a pdf when it is done.

  4. If you are looking for a Calgary based spey instructor I would recommend getting in touch with Maxwell Robinson 403-510-9810

send me a pm or email if you would like more info

I agree with the advice about trying different lines on your new Wind Warrior. You will probably find that the 510 compact skagit casts best as overlining this rod gives it a very mushy feeling

    good luck

  5. Ok I am obviously biased but if your in the market for a switch I would be sure to check out the Loop opti switch and 10'7" #6 and my trout rod of choice the new Pieroway Metal Detector 10'5" 400grain which is by far the lightest 6 weight switch on the market.

Many switch rods on the market today are too long to be much use for single hand casting. Switch rods are essentially compromise rods and many may excell at one discipiline(ie spey) but come up short at another(ie single hand). It is a challenging thing to design a rod that casts single hand overhead, spey casts, two hand overheads and single hand spey casts equally well. Many switch rods require different lines to perform well depending how they are being cast.

What makes the 10'5" Pieroway so special is that, when paired with the Rio AFS outbound 400 it was designed for, it does everything equally well with one line.

  6. I know one way to get more views is to spark a "discussion".. I can appreciate the efforts to come up with the petition to ban bait on the "T" and I agree it is a step in the right direction..Lets not put perfume on a pig here and think that if this petition goes through the "T" stocks are in the clear... this is not the final solution to a "WAY" bigger problem than bait. Control what we can control and a bait ban is one measure of control to avoid repeat hook ups.The next step is the de-watering issues/fish farms/poor ocean survival ect....ect.

rest assured I have a plan that should help address these issues-kind of a 10 step plan to be exact-this is step 3..........

  7. well put Riley!

thank you to everyone that has taken the time to sign Greg's petition over the past 3 days. For those that haven't signed yet please consider doing it today. As Maxwell pointed out, it only takes 30 seconds to complete this process. If you agree with the cause please also consider forwarding this link to your email contacts, twitter followers , blog readers or facebook peeps. Our goal is 2000 sigs and we hope to have this by the end of the second week in September. So yes this is a bit of a challenge, please help spread this around.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------

To the Honourable Barry Penner, British Columbia Minister of Environment.

We, the undersigned, hereby request that a “bait ban” sport fishing regulation be implemented for Interior Fraser River steelhead prior to the next sport fishing opening. (Interior Fraser steelhead rivers include the Thompson, Chilcotin, Seton, Bridge, Nahatlach and all other rivers in the Interior of BC where steelhead are known to inhabit.)

The principals of a bait ban as outlined in the BC government document “Bait Ban as a Management Tool” (http://www.env.gov.bc.ca/fw/fish/reg...1/bait_ban.pdf) demonstrate that such a regulation would be desirable among the angling public.

    These steelhead

    - are highly accessible;

    - are vulnerable to capture; and

    - every spawner counts.

    Further,

    - there is a need to protect juvenile fish;

    - the steelhead population is small; and

    - there is a need to spread the catchable supply of steelhead over more anglers.

According to the current BC Freshwater Fishing Regulations the definition of bait is: ‘“Bait” is any foodstuff or natural substance used to attract fish, other than wood, cotton, wool, hair, fur or feathers. It does not include fin fish, other than roe. It includes roe, worms and other edible substances, as well as scents and flavourings containing natural substances or nutrients.”

  10. I taught a Chinook school on the lower Dean this past June also managing some fishing time myself. Dean Chinook might be the hottest freshwater fish on the planet so I am happy to be headed back to the Dean for 2 weeks in June 2011. Here is some video of a nice fish that almost spooled me from the take, luckily guide Scott Baker-McGarva was quick with the boat so we were able to give chase.Rod was the 720 Pieroway Metal Detector rigged with a 720 compact skagit and 14' t14

    Dean Chinook

  11. tried the prototypes when you were in Calgary for the clinics. very nice. I especially liked the 10.5' switch.

Is it still a 7 wt? and what line do you suggest?

    Tom

Tom, the 10'5" is a 'mini skagit' meaning it is primarily a small two hander that also single hands exceptionally well. 400gr works well on this stick for both overhead and spey. The 420 skagit compact is puuuurfect for two handed sink tip work-should call this rig the butter stick cause its super smooth.

the 12' throws a 510gr skagit and is a lightweight 7/8, so far our best selling rod. Still have about 20 of these left at the early purchase price.

  12. Rickr,

I am curious how they got this 600 year figure

also no mention is made of thickness(test)

many of your sources say 'in a landfill' where it would be out of the sunds rays, honestly it sounds like something out of the ultra green camp as in "those fishermen leave behind line for 600 years"

I don't think any line should be left in the environment but I can tell you from time on the water that flouro is very recognizable when a pile is left on the bank. Mono goes soft and is breakable. There is no reason to choose flouro other than the supposed fishing advantage it offers. Mono is the more environmentally sound option, given how quickly it begins to break up due to exposure to sunlight.

  13. if your looking for a top quality jacket it is truly tough tobeat the Patagonia Guidewater.

If the choice is between the two listed I would choose the simms product. I sell Simms and OPatagonia at my shop and they are both great products. Slightly different fit between the two brands, I tend to favour Patagonia for both performance and the fact that they are willing to back their products with such a strong warranty.

  14. Probably Here

A whole bunch of answers say 600 years. ;)

I suspect that 'scientific fact' refers to the complete decomposition time if it is left in a dark place and not exposed to the elements. Many of your references refer to decomposition time in a landfill(no or very limited uv).As all anglers know, the sun's uv rays facilitate rapid decomposition of monofiliment. This is evidenced by the significant reduction in breaking strength observed in tippet with only moderate exposure to uv. Prolonged exposure to uv gives the mono a gummy feel and causes it to dull in appearance. At this point it will no longer hold knots and is no longer suitable for angling. One of the main selling features of flouro is that it retains istrength despite exposure to uv light.

Here is a quote from one of the sites your google search led to:

"I’ve used very strong 60 pound monofilament fishing line on my roof to hold a radio antenna steady, and it degraded in less than a year to where it broke in the wind and I could easily break it apart with my bare hands. After all the weathering, the once transparent line was faded and milky looking and had definitely decomposed somehow. If it’s exposed out in the open, you can rest assured it isn’t going to last anywhere near 500 years."

  15. also keep in mind that Flouro is evil for the environment as well as being hard on the wallet. Speaking of hard on the wallet Froghair leaders and tippet totally rock and get my vote for best. In second place, the people choice Rio and in third the standard, Umpqua

when it comes to swinging flies off of sink tip maxima ultragreen always wins!
