  1. I have been putting money away since September and in the spring I want to buy a higher end rod and reel for around $1000. I do most of my fishing on the Upper Oldman, Gap area as well as the Crow and Upper Elk. I do mostly dry fly but I am venturing in to some nymphing as well. I need something that can throw out a fly in the wind as it can get a "bit" breezy in these areas. Any suggestions?

    Thanks in advance

    BBB... I'm counting on you!

I with the rest on the Z-Axis. It's got enough jam for all of the things that you want to do with it. Try casting the 490 and the 590. For the reel, I would recommend a Lamson Litespeed 1.5. Probably the lightest true large arbor out there and you don't have to go to a spring and pawl drag. The conical drags on Lamson's are smooth and bulletproof.

  2. Saw this movie on the weekend; thought it was awesome. So, that's what it's like down in Texas? No wonder Rickr left!

The movie's full of great performances, including an all-time great bad guy played by Javier Bardem. Some great action

& graphic violence, but the best part of the movie for me was the dialogue- perfectly written, perfectly delivered by a

phenomenal cast. I even found myself laughing more than I would have expected, given what I'd read about the movie

before seeing it. Not quite sure what to make of the ending, & I think that applied to everyone in the theater; & that

may be exactly what the film-makers were going for. Very interested to know what y'all thought of this flick- but don't

give away the ending, for the benefit of those who may want to go see it.

GREAT movie! I think that if you read a few of Cormac McCarthy's books you'll understand why he ended the story the way that he did. He's definitely not your happy hollywood ending sort of guy. I think that he wants you to be a little unsure and uncomfortable with the ending. It kind of forces you to go back over the story and think about it a little more.

  3. Kinda makes you wonder how much money the shops make on flies in a season ...They charge about $2.50 per fly, and you are able to bring them in and sell them for a profit @..75 each...Interesting....I brought in about a 100 dozen super premium flies at about a buck each including double bunnies ...I support the shops but that does seem a little excessive from a percentage perspective....The same as jewelry stores I guess..

Just my opinion, but you get what you pay for in flies. Having been in the business, there are a lot of different grades of flies that any shops can purchase. Some of them simply choose not to stock the cheaper grade of flies. The margins aren't that different.

  4. There are a couple of reels that I would definitely recommend. You already mentioned Lamson reels, and I would stay with that if I were you. The Konic is a great reel with exactly the same drag system as their most expensive reels (like the Litespeed and the ULA Force). The conical drag is smooth, bulletproof, and does not require much maintenance (just leave it alone). I put my reels through a lot of abuse, and my Litespeed has stood up better than any of my other freshwater reels. The finish on these reels is extremely tough too. The Konic is probably a little less durable (cast instead of machined), but I think its the best bang for your buck out there. If you can afford it, I'd consider moving up to the Velocity (a really good looking reel).

Alternatively, look at the Sage 1600 and 1800 series reels. These are good Large Arbor reels that come in under $150.

    Cheers.

I feel somewhat alienated from the reel market. It seems that (unlike most gear) the rule "you get what you pay for" does not apply at all to this market. I've owned plenty of reels, and my favorite rang in at under 100 bucks and one of my least favorites was over 600 bucks.

Actually, my favorite was the BFR dragonfly, which is sadly now out of production. There are now all new reels from when I last looked and I don't know which ones are good and which are expensive paper weights. I see Ross has broken into the more budget market with the Flystart and the Flywater. Anyone have any experience with these? The old bottom model lamson was a decent reel, anyone know anything about the new Konic? Finally, has anyone heard anything about these Scierra reels?

BTW, if anyone has a BFR dragonfly in the 6wt range they want to sell let me know.

  5. I am very partial to Oban or Macallan - you can't go wrong with either of those. Like others above, I don't like the Glenfiddich. Generally, highlands are smoother and lowlands are peaty (which I think is more of a personal taste - personally I think they taste like feet).

Good call. Macallan is as good as they get. How about that Lagavulin you were talking about when we were ice fishing?
