  1. I was there when I was about 15 and JUST learning to fly fish. I remember the yellowstone river itself didn't open till July 15th... but maybe that has changed. I hit it on opening day and there was a LOT of guys on it (like, 15 in view everywhere you went), but even I managed 4 big cutts by using stonefly nymphs. The fish would actually use my legs as a current break, it was crazy. If you get a chance, take a boat ride over to the south end of the big lake (yellowstone lake) in the park. The cutty fishing was insane... really insane, a fish on every cast almost. Maybe they still run those boat rides over there (they drop ya off with a canoe or such)...

    Great, thanks for the info.

  2. We are heading to Montana in July and staying on the Yellowstone River just north of the Park. Anyone have any recommendations for places to fish in the area? I'm not bringing my boat but will probably take a float tube. Was thinking about taking a trip with a guide from Dan Baileys. There is so much water in the area to fish and I imagine the crowds will be insane wondering if anyone has any tips to share.

  3. Insurance was a huge issue for the shuttle service I use, they had to shutdown for a while until they found some that was reasonable. I don't know if all shuttles have the right insurance. They provide a pretty complete service and are heavily involved in the fly fishing community.

I've used a lot of different shuttles over the years, I think you would have to provide something pretty outstanding to compete.

  4. Hey all

Just got back from our honeymoon in Crocodile Bay, Costa Rica and tried some first time fly fishing for billfish.

I had a couple shots for sailfish the first day using a 14 weight rod but no hookups. Next day was supposed to be inshore but crew figured we should try offshore again (with #8 and #9 weight), caught a baby Dorado and a bunch of small yellow fin tuna and on the last tuna a #300 lb blue marlin came up right behind the boat and grabbed it. Needless to say the 8 weight snapped like a toothpick.

Last day back offshore (25 miles) with the 14 weight outfit again :) had a hookup with a sail but didn't get a good set.

Kind of hard to set when the backing is burning through your fingers.

But ended up hooking the Holy Grail a 200lb. Blue Marlin and released him with a leader touch at the boat after 30 minutes on 20 lb. tippet.

    My knees are still shaking.

Pictures aren't the greatest but what an experience.

  5. Check out e-bay for Action Optics, there is a Canadian store selling them for $50 bucks. I had to replace my 10 year old pair (Lost River, brown) that I had crushed in my vest, and got a mirror blue pair for the salt. Maui Jim's are awesome as well but it's hard to find deals on them. Once in awhile you see them at Costco.

Like brewingup says, the Bow can be more subtle rises than sight fishing but it still helps alot to cut the glare.
