Hi,

I've currently got a 6wt 9ft Launch and am very happy with it. I am looking for a 2nd rod; 4wt but am a little unsure of what length I should choose. I have been doing some small stream fishing north of Calgary where a 7'6 I think would be very handy; but lake fishing and on the Bow 8-9ft seems like it would be more efficient. The 7'6 is a Flight and seems very stiff, so I'm thinking I can get most the casting distance I would receive out of a longer rod? Thoughts?

Thanks!

Honestly, if your plan is to own only two rods I'd get a longer #3 over a #4. If you get a fast 3 weight you can easily fish lakes with it. If I could only own two rods I'd take a #3 and a #6 both in 9'.

im 100% with russ on this one.. i like the longer rods! i have a 8'8" 3wt loop that ive bin diggin.. can crush fish on te dry on te bow and fish any smaller stream no problemo! and if i want too do alittle highsticking or fish lakes wer ei need a little more distance the longer rod will be deadly!!!!!! there ar ea ton of great 3wts out there.. check out a few flyshops demo some and find what u dig! then buy it!

Rusty and max said it. I'd say get a 4 wt in the 8-8.5 foot range. I have a 7.5 foot 4wt, which I love, but more and more i just find my self using my 8.5' 5wt, or 9' 5wt, because those sorts of lengths are more preactical day in and day out. Casting, medning, etc are all aided by a couple more inches, without getting ridiculous. 8.5 feet is still very preactical on smaller streams. A 4 wt will be light enough, IMHO. Going too light will limit you, not necessarily in fish fighting or anything, but things like wind, large flies, etc.

A long 3 as the boys said. I have the almost same setup russ likes (a 10 foot 6wt , and a 3wt) only my 3 is a bit short. dont get me wrong I love it, but it's only good short range (30ft or less) which is fine for most places I use it but it wouldnt really do for lakes at all.

cheers.
