so let's get 2014 started with a hot topic... Jetboats.

Does anyone know what the "no motorboat" bylaw fine (in $$$) is on the Bow river above 22X?

From what I have been able to research the Feds deemed the Bow as a navigatable water way and the Feds should have the upper hand over the City in regards to the using the waterway, but of course I'm not a lawyer.

I know some of you will spaz about this topic but what are your thoughts on the legality of running jets right up to Bears Paws

	Hello,

I’m planning to start fishing in the lakes and rivers near my area, but I’m confused about fishing license rules. Does one license cover all local waters, or does each lake or river require a separate license?

Are there different licenses for freshwater versus saltwater fishing? Also, are there age-based exemptions for children or seniors?

How long is a license valid, and what are the penalties for fishing without one?

I’d really appreciate advice from people who fish regularly and any tips on how to get the correct license.

As a veteran, I was pleased to find out about the free Alberta CAF Veteran Resident Sportfishing License. I thought because we now have a digital WIN card and a digital License it would be easy to get a refund for my Resident Sportfishing License purchased through their auto renewal program. Unfortunately there are a few hoops you have to jump through first in order to get your free AB Veterans Sportfishing License.

If like me, you were on the auto renewal system and you’re a Veteran, after contacting the Alberta Fish & Wildlife district office, the following is what you have to do:

Print out your digital Resident Sportfishing License

Take the license to your local AB Fish and Wildlife office and fill out the form for voiding a license

(The Admin office will then send the form and printed license to AB Licensing who will process your refund))

Once the void and refund is complete you can then go online to purchase your AB CAF Veteran Resident Sportfishing License.

	You All Kidding Me!

Unfortunately, unlike most good stories, this one doesn’t start with a beer.

I build bamboo fly rods and have for the past 40 years. I sell the rods that I make with a recommended fly line weight rating. As I personally use Cortland 444 Peach or SL lines, I was somewhat unaware what has happened to the fly line weights in the past years.

A customer called and said, “This rod doesn’t cast worth *hit! It was overloaded.” Well, I test-cast each rod prior to placing it for sale. The rod cast fine in my hands so I asked the customer what line he was using. “Scientific Anglers Amplitude Infinity model,” he responded. So off to Scientific Anglers web site and I found the model of line he was using. No damned wonder, the line marked 6 weight on the box was really 7 weight line according to the line description from the site.

So that begged the question, how about other lines? A rainy day showed up, so I headed to the web sites of RIO, AirFlo, Scientific Anglers and Cortland looking over their fly line descriptions. I chose 6 weight lines to examine as 6 weight is a transition line between light and heavy trout fishing. Although they all presented the truth on their sites, the fly line box may not contain the line weight and could mislabeled by up to 3 weights heavy. I checked only what I considered trout lines and most of them were floating types.

Scientific Anglers: 23 floating lines checked – 7 of them were rated correctly

AirFlo 13 floating lines checked – 1 rated correctly

So where does that leave the buyer? You are faced with two issues. Firstly many of the rods manufactured today are oftenrated 1>3 line weights less that what they should be. However, you are saved as the line manufactures have bought into the game and mark most of their line lighter than is in the box.

Secondly the buyer will really be caught if he believes the internet chatter and buys a line one weight heavier for his new rod. Now he’ll have a 5 weight rod as marked by the manufacturer [ really a 6 or 7 weight] and looking for a line weight heavier, he buys a 6 weight as marked on the box and got a 7 or even 8 weight.

Why this happened, I haven’t a clue. There are industry standards for nearly everything in today’s world. Thankfully, the line and rod manufacturers don’t build nuts and bolts or any other of the myriad of tools, equipment, orparts that make the world go around.

	Further notes:

1] The standards for several Fly Fishing equipment are maintained by the American Fly Fishing Trade Association. See: https://affta.org/page/About

2] Several of the line manufacturers have changed their offerings on their sites since I collected the line weight information in July 2021. However, the lines could still be and likely are for sale at retailers everywhere.

2] The data list for each of the manufacturer is provided on my web site

Not looking for all-inclusive, but a rental for 6 adults and a 6 year old. If not near a beach, then a swimming pool. A direct flight would be preferable, but not a game changer. We are researching, but any suggestions greatly appreciated. First hand knowledge especially helpful.

Seriously, I'm not trying to start anything with this post, I'm just curious...

*The caveat being I know there is no legislation/regulation in Alberta related to the fishing guide industry, so technically none are required...

How many guides on here (independant, working through a shop [FFC sponsors or otherwise], etc.) have a business license and/or insurance, 1st aid training, swift water rescue, any or all?! Or would you even be willing to answer?!

Other then asking, how does one find out?! Or is asking the only way (if so how does one confirm that they actually do)?

P

P.S. It will be interesting to see if I actually get any responses from any guides (other then quite possibly a few strongly worded PMs)...

As you no i ask questions, sometimes i get an answer This shows to me that they're trying, like other provinces.T o create a stocking, that might help, with invasives or just add a better fishing experience.I applaud there efforts.MB for instance i stocking brook trout x lake trout [Splake].Iattempts to contol invasives & growing pop's of coarse fish..

Alberta has heard some positive things about these fish from colleagues in other places in Canada and figured we would try them here in the province to see if there are better tolerances to environmental conditions (not so much diet) in many of our stocked ponds.

I don't think I've ever jumped up from my tying chair for a fly fishing hookset. I've never wept watching a fly fishing video either. I have a Oiln Hart f2 reel and need spool repair. Fortunately I bought an extra spool a few years ago but my original spool won’t lock in place. Is there anyone who still works on these reels?

Decided to take advantage of the weather today and spent the day down fishing the banks at Fish Creek Park. Awesome day, one of the best was taking OFF my clothing from being too hot! LOL! Had a couple nice tugs on the line but that was about it. Not the point though. I spoke with a great couple fellows who were down to enjoy the day as well and do some fly fishing themselves, and was nice to share some fish tales and talk spring. Met another fellow who said he had his best day on the Bow River ever! He caught a few nice Whitefish and was very happy to tell me about it. Sometimes, it is just so great, and i am so thankful to share these times and look forward to always meeting new fishing friends, and being thankful for this wonderful journey. Cheers.
